Hey guys,
This may be a stupid question (but I am still a newbie for all intents and purposes) I have a carbine lower and a rifle length lower, each has its own respective upper 16" and 20". If I were to run the rifle length upper on the carbine lower or the carbine upper on the rifle lower, the buffer tube would remain with the original lower right? basically I am asking the lower is what dictates the type of buffer, right? thanks, truckie |

Is there a safe way to determine what buffer I should be running if I were to swap uppers? Is there any potential damage by running a carbine buffer in a rifle tube or vice versa?
Thanks! Quoted:
It depends more on bolt velocity than what length buffer and tube youre running, I've seen guys run govt mod uppers on a carbine buffers, and my Colt lwt sporter runs a standard A2 buffer. |

1) we're talking about ARs right?
2) Are we talking about Ban compliant ARs? How is the "Carbine Lower" configured? Fake telescoping stock? What make? Some Fake telestocks use Rifle length buffers. If that is the case then it really doesn't matter if you mix up the buffers. |

We are talking AR's
The carbine is a Colt preban with a collapsible stock and rifle length is a postban LRB lower. Both uppers are post ban (before anyone states that I cannot put a preban upper with evil features on the post ban lower )

You can't use a rifle buffer in a carbine tube. It won't work.
You can't use a carbine buffer in a rifle tube. It won't work (without a spacer). As far as weight goes, the answer is "it depends", but in reality most of them will run with any weight buffer. There's plenty of games you can play if you start tweeking things. Heck my Tac-Op rifle has two buffers in it. |
| having a 20 inch upper on a telestock lower or a carbine upper on a full stock lower either combo should work without any buffer changes if that is what you are asking. the type of upper doen't have much to do with the buffer. I have built/shot several 20 inch guns with carbine stocks/buffers and also some fixed stock rifle buffered guns with 16 inch barrels both will work fine |

The basic answer is Yes. You should keep the Telestock buffer with the Telestock, and the rifle buffer with the rifle stock. Yes, you can switch uppers and run the rifle upper with the telestock and the carbine upper with the rifle stock.
Legally, if you swap the telstock to a post ban receiver, then you have commited a crime in NYS. |
