Hi everyone, I have a queston and maybe a few. My girlfriend lives and works in New York City and I live in Virginia. I wanted to know the law on cncealed carry in New York?

I have a CCW permit and I'm almost 100% sure I can't carry in new york, but if I'm wrong tell me?

We both have talked about things becoming more serioues and if so I may move there for a year or two until we move back to Virgiinia.

Does NY have a concealed carry permit? If so how long do I have to be a resident of NY to apply?

I guess everyone just tell me what I'm looking at and thank you all for your help.

Maybe someone else can chime in with the NYC process. They make up their own rules.

In NY, permits are required for possesion, and are issued at the county level. Some counties issue unrestricted carry permits, some place restrictions on permits so that you can only carry under certain conditions.

Non residents are prohibited from possessing handguns. Generally speaking, outside of NYC, non residents can have rifles and shotguns. The Clinton AWB did not expire here, so keep that in mind.

Hope this helps til someone more informative comes along. Our laws suck.

You are right, NY does not honor any other state ccw's.  However NYC has a completely different set of laws than the state of NY.  It is possible for a NY resident to get a full carry permit, but it does not apply in NYC.  I beleive it is very hard if not impossible for an ordinary citizen to get a carry permit for NYC,  but I am from upstate and do not exactly know all of the specifics for NYC.

You will not be able to get a CCW permit in NYC...and the license for simple possession of a handgun in the home isn't even worh the money and hassle if you are only staying for a year or two.

In NYC, you also need a license to possess any long gun in the home...that is a lot easier to get, but still expensive and you have to jump through a ton of hoops...pretty much just as hard as getting a CCW in a "free" state. Also, 90% of long guns are banned in NYC since anything that can hold more than 5 rounds is considered an "Assault Weapon."

Most counties in "upstate" NY are very CCW friendly, and are pretty much may issue lifetime CCWs that are valid for FULL carry ANYWHERE but NYC and schools (we can carry in banks, bars, parks, stadiums, churches etc.)...but Long Island / Westchester counties (which are near NYC) won't give you a CCW either...but you can't even apply for a handgun permit until you live in the county for 6months, sometimes 1 year depending on the county.

Long story short, forget about bringing ANY handguns into NY unless you want to jump through a ton of hoops. You can bring long guns (That are AWB compliant) and PREBAN high cap  (+10) mags into NY...but NYC is a lost cause.

She is a fashion designer and in a year or two is looking to do something else because NY is not where she wants to live the rest of her life. I know its not where I want to live forever lol I like the city just not that big.

To bad nothing has changed in NY laws to allow conceal carry, it shouldnt be that way and really it shouldnt be that way in any state.

Thanks everyone for the help and info and if I do make the move maybe an ARFcom meet up.

PS She is worth the move, very good person who is original from the midwest.

Also remember, handgun laws do not only apply to ccw.  You need a permit to possess handguns in NYS.  Also, NYS does not recognized ANY other states permits.

Same for Long Island.

Yes, NY State is truly screwed up this way. Even if I were to take you to the range with me, you would not be allowed to shoot my handguns without having a NY CCW permit yourself, even upstate.  I took me a year and a half + about $300 in various fees and costs to get my permit.

It requires patience and paperwork and it is difficult but not impossible.

Long Island I agree is outrageously harder than it should be but getting a permit as long as you havent done anything stupid in your life that involved the man and your not crazy with get you a restricted permit .
