im not pointing anyone out, im just really curious.

there is a member on the EE selling a savage model 12 in .223. from what i gather its a factory gun. the seller states in his listing that said gun has been shot out to 1000 yards........

....how plausible is that?  I mean what would the bullet drop be of a .223 round at 1000 yards. now im not calling this guy out or anything..it just got me thinking about how possible it is. I highly doubt that a factory gun in .223 could print accurate stings at that distance...and what would the FTLBs of energy be on target at that range? for some reason I was always under the impression that .223s started running out of steam in a hurry past 500 yards.

anyone ever try it? whats the bullet drop? speed?

It's possible with the right equipment. There are service rifle shooters using a 20" barrel grouping at 1k yards, so it can be done. The limiting factor for the Savage is going to be the twist rate of the barrel. There are some rifles with a 1\7, but most are 1\9 which limits you to the 69gr rounds. Some shooters use a 26" 1\9 with a hot load to get the 75gr rounds to stabilize, but that's a rifle by rifle test, not something you can count on doing consistently. I would politely call BS unless the shooter can explain how it's done.

I just looked up the Model 12 series all of them are 1:9 twist and there was one in 1:7 Barrel length all to be 26", Short action with an accutrigger.

I have a stevens 200 and the only difference is barrel length and weight

I reload all my ammo using

People shot 1,000 yards with the 45/70 and black powder rifles going much slower than the .223.  It is doable if you have the come ups right and can dope the wind.

Well I can shoot it at a thousand yards to, doesn't mean I would hit anything.  Same can be said for the seller.  Thousand yards for a .223, the internet says its possible, yeah anything is, reality wise it didn't hit anything.
