submitted my amendment to my Pistol permit office almost three weeks ago to have restrictions lifted from my permit.
Just got the envelope yesterday with my new plastic Pistol permit and it has UNRESRICTED nice and bold under my mug shot!!! I got to say it was very easy, I basically just sent a typed letter stating my 12 years having an unblemished history of gun ownership over three different counties in NY state. I also mentioned I have taken several safety and practical handgun courses over the years .Then just thanked the judge for his time on the matter .The only thing I can say is I wish I had done it sooner. Easy as can be. Is this becoming more the trend lately?? Now I just have to work on the wifes permit. |

Sorry to hear you had to wait 12 years. When I first got my permit in 98 I lived at my parents house in Westchester County.....so that was a complete no go there!! Then I got married in 2000 and moved to Rockland County , had to reapply and do the whole permit process again
I actually knew the Judge who signed my permit in Rockland County. When I say I know him he is a 30 year friend of my in laws in Rockland and I attended his daughters wedding and he was at my wedding. So now after living in Rockland for a couple years I figure let me use my connections and go for an unrestricted there, well I guess I was mistaken. The judges secretary basically stopped my permit from getting to his desk. I tried to reach out to the judge first hand and it was just too much of a hassle. He is a great guy and very down to earth its just Rockland might as well be Manhattan. So now fast forward to 2005 I move the family to Orange County and I had to get my permit moved as well. I was told I had to do the complete application process a third time I freaked out a bit and the pistol clerk got back to me a few days later and informed me a transfer could be done instead. I asked at this time if I could have any restrictions removed and she basically said it depends on the judge. The judge who handles my area doesn't like to do this I am told. I guess at this point living like a sheep in NY state I just was happy I didn't have to spend a hundred dollars to get the same bullshit permit to own a handgun, remember this would have been THREE TIMES .
A few weeks ago I just got a bug up my ass that if I was going to do it the time was now and I really think I let my permit history speak for itself. My letter that was attached was short and sweet but pretty much reflected my little short history above. |

I'm interested in doing the same. Thanks. I have taken the basic NRA handgun saftey course more then once. About eight years ago I was visiting family in Arizona and went with my wifes cousin to a private range that was giving an advanced handgun course as well. Over the years I have been lucky enough to shoot with military and law enforcement people wich really helped my handling skills. So most of the classes had been formal but alot was informal training. |

It's amazing how a constitutional right is left up to the discretion of a single ruler.
Forget the constitutional argument even...do these power hungry judges actually think that just because they type the words "target/hunting" onto someone's license, that it will really stop a nut job from carrying and going on a shooting spree if they really wanted to? Their "restrictions" only stop the law abiding from protecting themselves. These judges need to realize that owning and carrying a gun should not be thought of as a priviledge only for those they deem worthy. Unfortunately that's how the law is written in NY and NYC. These little feifdoms need to end. Now. Starting with NYC and working it's way up the Hudson. |

Once Heller and MacDonald are "strictly" applied to states through various court cases, such as Alan Gudura's case against Westchester County, that should change. Civil rights can not be subject to the whim of an individual otherwise I suspect a lot of African Americans would still be disenfranchised down south. New York State should at some point, assuming an honest incorporation of Heller, become a shall issue state. Of course I will probably be earthworm food by them but it may very well happen unless there is a change in the makeup of the SCOTUS and they are given a chance to revisit Heller and MacDonald. |

It's also strange though... |

God bless Putnam County...
Permit process took about 6 weeks Applied to have restrictions removed the same week i received my permit...5 weeks later, and a visit with the judge, all restrictions removed. 11 weeks start to finish. Congrats!!! I thought my process was a bitch compared to those counties that just issue full carry right off the bat, but compared to what you have went through, i really appreciate how easy it was for me. Congrats again, and welcome to the club! |

The funny thing for me having an unrestricted permit finally is I have not been carrying ....yet!!
My Glock 19 is good to go and I have other pistols that I could carry .I think a good holster is in order though!! I have been thinking about a more compact pistol as well like a Khar or compact Glock. Also I would like one of those lock boxes on a cable to keep it secure in my truck when not on my person, like at work and such!! I would like to change gears now and just say this. Just for the record, I was hesitant to post this thread as to not bring attention to myself but my feeling is that maybe my story would motivate other New York Brothers to seek unrestricted permits...in fact demand an unrestricted!! I just dont feel posting the Judges name who granted my permit (what bullshit) in this post was a good idea for this simple reason. Its a know fact that this is a public forum and anyone can register and observe the content in our posts. I just feel keeping the Judges name anonymous is in every ones best interest. |

God bless Putnam County... Just keep in mind your RKBA is at the whim of the current sitting PC County judge(s). Years ago PC routinely issued unrestricted licenses and all it took years ago was an anti-gun judge to start restricting licenses. As are all our gun "rights" here in NY, are at the whim of Albany.... I would think that having been issued a unrestricted permit, I would have to give them (judges) a reason to re-restrict me, and i don't plan on doing that!!! Do you think a new judge could come in and just blanket re-restrict every permit without a court hearing, based on a whim? I needed to go before the judge and have a ruling in my favor to remove the restrictions, would think the same would have to be done to re-restrict. what do you think? |

A new licensing officer can place restrictions on your unrestricted license without holding a hearing. That's exactly what was done in WC. You could file an Article 78 proceeding in SC but your chances of being successful as it stands now are slim to none unless you can establish "proper cause" to the judges satisfaction. You were granted a hearing and successfully had you restrictions removed becuase your judge is pro-gun. If you had appeared before an anti-gun judge he/she would have told you to FOAD as they routinely do in many of the counties throughout NYS. Hopefully the SAF/Alan Gura WC lawsuit will eventually change that but for now it's business as usual in NYS. |
