So I am thinking about building an M16A1 clone and was wondering if shaving the ears off the bayonet lug sufficient for AWB compliance?  I have no problem removing the entire lug but prefer the look on retro builds.

For reference I have included a link to ADCO's site where they show the lug with ears removed...

Is it approved? Who knows? NYS doesn't have specific rulings or statements on such things. It really comes down to what you feel comfortable with. Some hack the whole thing off. Others feel that grinding the ears off no longer allows it to function as a bayonet lug and is in following with the spirit of the law.

Personally I grind the ears off and am satisfied with that, but that's not legal advice.

Cut the ears off... if the rifle can't mount a bayonet, it's just a nub of metal.

+1 it's the equivalent of duct taping it on...

The ears just keep it from falling off when you point it downward or after you stab someone. So strictly speaking, if you gring the ears off, the bayonet mount still works 75% of the time.

I'm a "get rid of the whole thing" kinda guy.

I mean, I get the idea of keeping as intact as possible, for a replica build..........but is the "authentic" look worth the possible problems that could arise?  Only you can really answer that.

dose anyone make rail mounted bayonets? thus making any rail a possible "bayonet lug"?  In this state, I wouldnt doubt it, nor would I take my chances, I would cut the whole thing off and play it safe..

Shhhhhhhhh.....  That's been my biggest gripe about the pistol bayonets on the market, silliness aside. Any rifle with 1913 rail near the end could be considered an evil no-no now because of them. So lets delete these posts and never speak of it again.

+1

I did this on my AK type builds

AK doesnt even come close to being able to lock in, simply isnt possible

also like it has been said, it retains the "look", as guns with the entire block gone look very very naked....like something is wrong with them.

Yeah, I have never really closely examined a GI Bayonet so I don't know how it really attaches.  At the end of the day I think I'll end up chopping the whole thing off to avoid any possible "issues."
