I'm driving up the East Coast early next month and I am considering spending a night in Manhattan.  I've been to NYC several times but have always flown to LaGuardia and taken a taxi into town.  I'm not sure I'm comfortable trying to drive across the city because drivers there are so much more aggressive and fast-moving than I am used to.  One little fender-bender could seriously complicate my trip.  So I am wondering if there is a place in Jersey or on the outskirts of town that I could park my car and take the subway into town overnight.  I'm looking for a place that would be close to I-95, secure but also relatively inexpensive, and within walking distance of the subway.

Any ideas?  Thanks in advance for any info.

Last time I was in Manhattan I drove to Jersey City and took the train to NYC. I think I paid around $20 for parking and the garage was within 1/10th of a mile of the train station.

If you don't want to drive into the city, it's easy to leave your car in NJ and then take public transportation over.  Go online and look up the PATH trains - they're commuter trains that run frequently and all end in central Manhattan.

Parking in NYC isn't actually too bad.  If you're brave, you can read the street signs, find a spot and park for free (find a more residential neighborhood outside of midtown) or you can find a garage (again NOT in midtown!) that will probably charge you from thirty to fifty dollars a day.

I owned a car for four years while living in Manhattan and never paid for parking!

Where are you from that you don't wanna drive in the big bad city? It's really quite navigable.
