Hello. Im in the Air Force and after coming back from a 7 month Afghan tour I visted my cousin in SC. We spent about an hour shooting his AK and I fell in love. I was told that the AK was illegal in NJ, but there was a few "similar" options. I was told the WASR 10 was legal by one person but then told it was illegal by another. Can I get some assistance on the matter? Also if it happens to be legal, under what circumstances and what would be the best place to pick one up online. Thanks in advance.

As long as it doesn't have a threaded bbl, bayonet lug and you only have 15rd or less mags in it you're fine. (oh and it can't say "Kalashnikov Type" on it lol)

Finding one online may be difficult as most are NOT in NJ legal configuration. There is a nice one for sale on the EE here right now for $750.00

WASR's are on the lowest scale of AK's by the way.

You could also buy a Saiga (choice of .223, 30-06, .308, 7.62x39) and convert it from default sporter stock to to fixed AK stock/pistol grip or whatever meets your fancy as long as it meets all of the NJ requirements (not sure how similar NY and NJ AWB laws are). They also range from 16" to 22"... maybe even longer. You can order 15 round polymer mags as well from stores specializing in Saiga components in whatever cartridge you choose.

Here is a link with a quick overview of Saigas: http://www.savvysurvivor.com/saiga_rifles.htm

I have one in a .308 that works great :)

You can try Henderson Defense.  They have a number of ban-compliant AK's.  Call their shop and tell them what you'd like....as well as your location.  Good luck.

What is referred to as post ban configuration is also NJ compliant....it means no bayo lug, no flash hider and no collapsible stock., ..also no 30 round mags......you can get 10 round mags or now converted to 15 round mags....
