I just bought my first Eotech holosight.  What a thing of beauty. If any of you are considering buying one just do it. I can't wait to get to the range.

I love my 552, now I just need to get an aimpoint and an acog. Hope you bought a AA version because the N type sucks the big one! Have fun with the new toy!

Picture resolution on a blackberry doesn't do it justice but here is the 552 in the middle of the night with a PVS-14.

I have a eotech but I think its quite bulky.  Anyone have other recommendations for a smaller and compact one under $500 and with the quality of an eotech?

I bought the 512. Because it uses AA batteries. I bought it on ebay for less that $350

I picked up a 512 last year, when DPMS was selling them for $280 shipped.  That's the cheapest I've ever seen NIB 512's.

I'm going to pick up a Aimpoint CompC3 soon.

I recommend a Magnifier for anyone who has an Eotech. I love mine

I've owned and used Eotech's (512, 552), Aimpoints (Comp M2) and ACOG (TA01 ECOS) and a Doctor Optic on my various AR's.

My Aimpoint broke, the brightness adjustment dial sheared off from a slide fall (buttstock down, muzzle leaned against a walll, rifle slid sideways down the wall). It sat/will sit in a ADM Medium height mount.

My ACOG I traded for rifle parts and cash. The 4x magnification just wasn't enough for a magnified optic and it was extremely hard to use for close range. I liked it. But for the price of it, I decided to get more gear (a half of an AR15 with other gear and cash) and use my variable optic AR's for magnified AR15 uses.

The Doctor Optic was neat, but it was very easily broken and to turn it off, you had to literally encapsulate it in a matte black plastic shell (to turn off the optic/save your battery life) that kept trying to get lost whenever I took it off the optic. If the plastic cover is off, the battery stays on and only lasts a few days at the most. To change the battery you have to un mount the optic to get to the battery compartment. With upgrades like the LaRue metal ears/shroud it is more rugged, but that is an expensive upgrade for an already expensive mini-optic.

The Eotech 512 did nothing that the 552 didn't do better. I sold the 512 for cash to finance my 10mm addiction and have arrived at the 552. I will keep the Comp M2 whenever it gets fixed by Aimpoint USA and use it on another one of my carbines, but for me, the 552 works well for my needs.

All are good optics, these are just my experiences from owning and using them (I'm not parroting things I've heard from others, these are my experiences). All are useful. it is much like a ford or chevy debate, its personal preference.
