My mind that is. I got a good deal on ammo cases that I couldn't pass up, so I bought a whole pallet and started restoring them. The one on the left is how they basically all look before I restore them. as opposed to the one on the right which is restored. I might be in over my head here, but it is keeping me busy during the cold atleast.

If memory serves me correct, there was 120 .50 cal boxes on the pallet.

Now I just gotta figure out what to do with them

ahhhh I like... my kind of project. How are you going about cleaning them up? That one looks excelllent that you restored.

I can see the headlines now.
120 Cases of Military Machine Gun Ammunition Seized From LOcal Mans Home

hey now, I never said the things were full of ammo
Im actually sanding them down to get all the surface rust off them, but not enough to wipe the writing off em. Then I am clear coating them to bring the color back and prevent them from rusting. The insides are so damn nice on all of them. I'm thinking of selling them when I'm done with em' but I'm not sure yet. I can probably figure ways to use 20 or 30 of them, but definately not 120 of them...

Fill them with cement and line your driveway with them.

Forget the cans...what do you have in the background?  My kind of man cave.

you got a sand blaster there? I powder coat some small things on the side.. maybe you can sand blast a few i can powder them and we can split some.

I figured you had the stencil to put the writing back on.  Very nice job.

I work for local government and we used to buy stuff from state and fed sruplus property. Ammo cans were .50 each. you could pick the perfect ones from 1000s in any caliber, 223, 45, 50. Not any more
2/15/2009 5:49:49 AM EDT
[#10]
no, unfortunately no sand blaster. If I wanted to I could hit em' with the DA gun or the die grinder, but they really dont need that. I tried painting over the whole thing and re-stenciling them, but the stencil I have is not an exact match. It looks good, but nothing like the original. The ones I cant save that will need a total repaint will either get restenciled or a custom paint job, and so far I have only had one complete writeoff out of the whole pallet.
2/15/2009 10:08:28 AM EDT
[#11]
Yeah, I'd buy one.

Looks like something is leaking from your pallet!

Sell them when you're done. Put me down for 5

They are going for 4-6$ at gun shows.  I might take some off you depending on where you live.  Shipping would be too much.

I live on LI not near the Nassau/Suffolk border. I was thinking of selling the restored ones for $8.00 a can, and that includes sanding and reclearing the can, oiling the hinges and making sure the insides are clean and all that good stuff. The insides of these cans are gorgeous. On some of them, you can see the marks were the .50 cal bullet heads touch the inside walls, so it leaves a perfect little scratch.

The cans that I deem to be writeoffs, as in they have holes in them, or are just too much of a headache, I'll probably get rid of for like $2.00 a can.
2/15/2009 3:34:25 PM EDT
[#16]
Oh yeah, and I had to transfer every can by hand to that pallet, because I couldnt get the original pallet out of the truck. The cans werent leaking, the pallet was already moist
2/15/2009 3:51:42 PM EDT
[#17]
Out of the whole pallet, there were 1 .30 cal can, 4 5.56 cans, and 115 .50 cal cans. heres a few I did today. my camera doesnt like cooperating with me though. The one on the bottom was a total repaint including ghetto stencil job with random non-existant contract number..

damn, if people want em that just means I gotta get to work. That's good, this week coming up I dont have anything planned during the night. This will keep me busy.
2/15/2009 10:39:03 PM EDT
[#20]
Wow.  Looking good.

At this point you may just want to get busy buying up enough ammo to fill all of those!

How about some pics of the insides of a few?
2/16/2009 4:15:46 AM EDT
[#22]
The insides are all nice. Anyone that I come across that looks like the seal has been compromised, or the inside is just not right, I've been putting aside as a potential writeoff.

I guess whatever keeps you busy. I don't think I'd invest any energy into restoring them other than spray painting them......

id take a few depending on where u can meet me.

EE???

[#27]
Yeah, I'll definately be selling most of them when I finish restoring some more, and I thought about posting in the EE, but it would have to be a FTF only thing, as I wouldn't begin to figure the uneconomical way of shipping these things. Hopefully I can bang out another 10 or so tonight, so I can start moving them a bit

They look nice, I will take 10, to split with a buddy, when they become available.

Nice - they look great.  My kind of project as well, looks like fun.  I'd be interested in a few too - let me know if you finish and want to sell 1 or 2.  Nice work.

I live near you (on the Suffolk Side).  Put me down for 5.

I can come to your house or meet you wherever.  PM me when you have a few to sell...

Nope. Why how much are they charging?

I got about 20 restored right now, and about another 5 with custom paint jobs on em'. Ill be doing another 10 or so hopefully tomorrow night, and working my ass off this weekend to bang a whole bunch out. I'm sending PM/Im/whatever there called to the people who asked in the order they asked as they become available.

Ron's been out of stock for a while.

Naturally, this happens right after I had 20 shipped to me. Perfect timing as usual.

Big thumbs up to Blue70Chevelle

Met him this afternoon at his shop and took a few cans off his hands.  He's doing a great job refinishing them...very little rust, new paint, and very clean inside.  All the gaskets are in great shape too.

If you're in the Nassau/Suffolk area and need any, I highly recommend...

Just returned from blue70chevell's "office" with a dozen cans, and will be going back for a few more next weekend.
This man is putting in a lot of work to deliver a nice finished product at a good price, anything not worthy is being set aside .
Nice clean shop and a good guy to deal with.

once again, just glad I can help and it was nice meeting you. Trying to keep the cost down while supplying a quality product is a difficult thing, but its for a worthy cause.
