I'm going through some medical crap that's given me some free time to think about a lot of stuff and the past few days I've come up with a really good idea for permanently modifying 30rd steel rifle mags to hold only 15rds. While retaining the proper 30rd length so the rifle doesn't look neutered. I'm considering doing an AK and if I can find a cheap used steel AR mag I'll do one of those as well. Mostly just doing this to pass the time and give myself another option when I go up to NJ, but if people like them I might offer a couple for sale. They'll look the same as a standard 30rd mag except for the seam welded baseplate and 3 ~1/8" plug welds on the baseplate.

The main thought here was to make it permanent  and by permanent I mean permanent as in if someone was really trying to stick it to you and mess with this to undo it, they wouldn't be able to without having some serious fabrication skills and therefore manufacturing their own mag from this mag. It's unable to be reverse engineered in that taking it apart would ruin all of the mounting tabs so it wouldn't be able to go back together unless the mag body were heavily modified and a whole different base plate were fabricated from scratch.

The other concern was that the plug wouldn't be able to be removed if the welded bases of the rods were drilled out, they won't fall out on account of the welded mid-level cross brace.

The only way I can think of to undo this plug would be to use a plasma cutter and cut a huge oval around all 3 rods, but to circumvent that I'm going to have the bases of the rods close to the base of the spring so if as plasma cutter were used (highly unlikely) it'd make the baseplate unusable because the hole would be so big spring wouldn't be able to seat.

It'll use a full length spring so the mags could be stored fully loaded for long periods of time w/o worry of stressing the spring and reliability would be high on account of it only using the last 50% of the spring tension. (I know the argument that you can store mags loaded and it isn't the compression of the spring but the usage that wears them out, I won't argue that but I'd think that compressing 50% of the spring can't be a bad thing)

Enough with the babbling and on with the 1st grade level photoshop!

Magpul makes 10 round mags with 30 round bodies. C-Products makes 15 round mags with 30 round bodies.

As far as 15 round AK mags, many members here already have homemade ones made from 30 round steel mags. If you must have a 30 round body, Promag sells them as 10 rounders.

Many members can't be bothered with 30 rounds bodies. Some say "Why tempt fate?"

I've been hearing lately that in NJ now even if it's permanently modified to only hold 15, if it's a 30rd mag body, it's illegal.

Not really. Mags now have to be permanently modified to hold 15 rounds. However the AG has yet to tell us the defination of permanent.

Typical of NJ

If the way I weld this up isn't permanent, I don't know what is!

As to why I wanna do it, 2 words......Cabin Fever!
Not trying to make a living on it or anything like that.

But also wanna add, if I'm allowed 15, I'm havin' 15 not 10! That's for Californians!

pre-ban 30 rounders are still pretty cheap, why not purchase one than use that guy when you visit NJ or NY?

For the 20 or 30 rounders, if you want them to keep their look, couldn't you fill them with metal epoxy to get the desired rounds?  That would be hard as hell to get out if you could.

It's one of those things that sounds good until you actually try to do it in reality. The reality is, that'd be a LOT of epoxy, plus the spring still has to work.

I'll post pics of this when I do it in a couple weeks, I think it'll come out nice.

Casting resin or bondo might be cheaper alternative to epoxy.

Thanks !!! I may grab a couple of those but Im really looking for ones like the short NJ  15 rd ones, they work great off the bench. I was hoping to see if they made 10 rounders similar in size to the 15 rounders. I got to use a couple of Biohazzards Mags and I loved them.

Even though there is no official policy in place yet for "permanent" altered mags. Many of those who hold the power here in Jersey will give you an earful if you pull out a 30 rounder. Altered or not.
