Would like to know whether it would be legal to put a pistol grip....  onto a Thompson Center contender rifle  I speculate that it would be just like with the pistol grip only mossberg shotguns - so long as the barrel is above 16" (as opposed to 18" with shotgun - the photo rifle barrel above is 24" btw) and has an overall length above 26"?

You'd be treading some real dangerous ground, legal wise. IF you're right, you'd have an awkward range toy. IF you're wrong, you're looking at not only state charges (unlicensed pistol) but federal as well (turning a rifle into a pistol). I don't know that I'd want to find out.
