I don't post on e here too much but...today is special. My neighbor and myself set up a new range. Our old range was 485 yards. Our real old range was 160 yards. New range is 700 yards! OMG the target looks soooooo small! We used to aim about 2.5 feet high about with 06's, 7mm mags, 270 WSM, and 50's. Now I'm guessin 5-6 feet. About 10 mph breeze used to take the bullet around a foot each way it seemed. Now I'm guessin way more. Will find out next weekend. Usin 4-wheelers and walki talkis for reconissance. BTW...we used 4x8 sheet plywood...staple tyvek to it...BIG stakes..drill holes in plywood and ziptie with big zipties...spraypaint flourescent circle...about 10" dia...don't use black...can't see the holes...can't really see em anyway though...cept the 50 holes...u can kinda see them a little with a spotting scope. |
www.shooterready.com/lrsdemohi.html for some virtual practice. This is a good "game." Google ballistics charts for your calibers. They will be helpful for a 700yd range, and will greatly reduce your guesswork. |

Will try to post pic tonight...I've never posted pics here...anyone care to tell me how? Do I have to link to a pic hosting site? AND another problem I have posting pics...where I'm at there is NO highspeed...the fastest I can connect on dial up is 24 k!!!! So it sucks! Basically is't just 2 huge fields seperated by a treeline where we took out a few trees...there is a little white rectangle at the end which is our tyvek on the plywood. We shoot outta pickup trucks. Which brings up a question I have...someone told me that is illegal in NY...anyone know? Sorry...not near Nassau county...Cattaraugus. Thanks for the link SP10. |
A bench is probably forthcoming...trucks will work ok for now...cept the blast from the 50's is extremely punishing in the back of the truck. The cops have never given me trouble for shooting...so the question about the legality of shooting from a truck was more out of curiousity. I've had cops over to shoot and it's never been an issue. |
We've been using plugs and muffs on our 485yd range. That works fine...except for the with the 50's. That is still punishing. I keep the muzzle as far off the tailgate as I can which helps some. Obviously a bench would be better....but we're gonna use the trucks for now...we just set up the target and cut the trees yesterday...so this is all new. |
