So i was told that a person under 21yrs old can buy a handgun so long as it's a ftf transaction not through an FFL. I don't see how this could be legal, but figured i'd ask arfcom for some wisdom. So basically; Is it legal to posess a handgun if under 21yrs of age? is the above true? thanks guys |
Just before Christy Whitman left for the EPA she signed a law that you have to be 21 to purchase a hand gun FTF (face to face) in NJ. |

Yep - gotta be 21. Even a FTF transfer of a handgun in NJ requires a permit to purchase, and as Matt pointed out, the law as of 2001 requires one to be at least 21 to apply for the permit. Link to updated law |
Yep, I had 6 pistols before I was 21 all purchased in FTF sales. |
Christy Whitman is a ****(yes, i censored myself)! Oh well, I guess I'll still be waiting another 5 months plus how ever long it takes the local PD to process my handgun ID application. thanks guys |
I know the pain, in the mean time go buy another rifle you know you want to.

yeah many people think that the 21+ thing is a federal law when it's really a state by state law. I had many handguns and a carry permit all before I was 21 |
| In NY until Mario Patakitax had the law changed in 2000 there was no minimum age in NY for the issuance of a NYS carry concealed license. On of my friends had his license issued at 18 and in some counties it was possible to get a license at 16. Contrary to popular belief years ago with the exception of the NYC pistol licensing law NY was a pretty gun friendly state outside of the big down/upstate cities. |
you know you want to.
