In Rockland county, once you buy a 10th handgun you have to have a safe, but other than that there are no limitations.

From what i have heard there is at least one guy living in the county that owns over 100 handguns.

How many firearms can one legally own in NYS ??? I heard 20, 10 or any amout as long as the person is in his/her home ? I looked in the my old penal law book and it was 20. I'm just wondering want if anything changed ???

Thanks,

It's not "20". There is something in the penal code to the effect of not being able to legally travel with MORE THAN 20 pistols unless one was a dealer, coach, etc.

I own more handguns than there are weeks in a year. I ASSUME that my FFL is on a 1st name basis for the ATF rep that services our area.

I don't believe there is any Penal limatations unless there is a violation of another law...Phil-A-Steen has commented on thhis before.  However, if you're "raided" or otherwise investigaed/arrested and they find more than one or two guns in the house you have an "ARSENAL"... What constitures that is still an arbitrary number, one thing for sure is that most of us wouldn't even call it a collection.

When you show up at the Pistol Permit counter and they smile and ask you by first name how many you're going to add today...you might be a "gun-nut".

Let me clear up the confusion . . . you can own ZERO firearms* unless you are a police officer or other exempt person.

*  Here is the rub: Under Article 265, a "firearm" is a machinegun, short barrel rifle/shotgun, revolver or pistol for which you have no permit, postban assault rifle with evil features, etc.  Ordinary rifles and shotguns, preban assault weapons and revolvers and pistols for which you have a permit are not "firearms".

The confusing law is Article 265.03, which makes it a 2nd degree weapons possession to own FIVE or more "firearms" -- i.e., >5 illegal guns.  Legal guns do not count towards this limit (nor is there a limit on the number of legal guns you can own.  ETA: This was a recent law change, the number used to be 20.  I'm going on memory here but I believe the maximum sentence on a Class C is 15 years.
