Due to interest in another arfcom event at our store, and based on the success of the training session with the USMA CWT, we are working on putting together another training session and open range opportunity to benefit the CWT program.  If you are interested, please see the following thread, www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&f=9&t=261995, and reply to express interest in the training- thanks!

NY/NJ Members,

The decision was just made that this year's Houghton 3 Gun Memorial Match at West Point will be postponed until the fall due to weather conditions that will prohibit the safe execution of competitive field courses that require fast movement.

In light of this decision, the USMA Combat Weapons Team is opening 3 of the 7 reserved ranges for a unique day of tactical training that will not conflict with the range limitations.  The USMA Combat Weapons Team is a cadre of elite cadets that go through what is considered the most difficult selection process on post for a non-academic or athletic organization.  Their primary purpose is to serve as tactics and firearms instructors for the rest of the core of cadets.

Due to the postponement of this match, the CWT will be offering a full day of tactical firearms training in pistol, rifle and shotgun for a course fee of $125.  This is something that has never been offered in the past, and may not be offered again due to the tight schedule requirements of the cadets.  This is extremely short notice, but for those who have the time and resources, it will not be an experience that will not be forgotten.

Additional information and course requirements will go out tomorrow.

Minimum requirements will be as follows:

Valid Government Issued Pistol Permit
Pistol with minimum 5 magazines (IDPA legal or USPSA Production Class Pistol preferred)
Belt Holster and Magazine Pouches
500 Rounds of Pistol Ammunition
AR15 Style Rifle w/ Sling and minimum 5 magazines
Magazine Pouches or Chest Rig
500 Rounds of Rifle Ammunition
Shotgun w/ Sling and shell pouch, dump pouch, or shell carrier/bandolier
100 Rounds of #7 or higher shot
Knee Pads
Wraparound Eye Protection (min Ansi Z87 spec)
Ear Protection
Ball Cap
Water, Snacks
Cold Weather Clothing

Interested parties can contact [email protected] to reserve a slot- class size is limited, so if you're interested, get on it!

You are going to have to check with the organizers of the event, but I think you are covered under ARTICLE 265 265.20 Exemptions:

19. "Duly authorized instructor" means (a) a duly commissioned officer
of the United States army, navy, marine corps or coast guard, or of the
national guard of the state of New York; or (b) a duly qualified adult
citizen of the United States who has been granted a certificate as an
instructor in small arms practice issued by the United States army, navy
or marine corps, or by the adjutant general of this state, or by the
national rifle association of America, a not-for-profit corporation duly
organized under the laws of this state; or (c) by a person duly
qualified and designated by the department of environmental conservation
under paragraph d of subdivision six of section 11-0713 of the
environmental conservation law as its agent in the giving of instruction
and the making of certifications of qualification in responsible hunting
practices.

7-d. Possession, at an indoor or outdoor shooting range for the
purpose of loading and firing, of a rifle, pistol or shotgun, the
propelling force of which may be either air, compressed gas or springs,
by a person under twelve years of age, under the immediate supervision,
guidance and instruction of (a) a duly commissioned officer of the
United States army, navy, marine corps or coast guard, or of the
national guard of the state of New York; or (b) a duly qualified adult
citizen of the United States who has been granted a certificate as an
instructor in small arms practice issued by the United States army, navy
or marine corps, or by the adjutant general of this state, or by the

organized under the laws of this state; or (c) a parent, guardian, or a
person over the age of eighteen designated in writing by such parent or
guardian who shall have a certificate of qualification in responsible
hunting, including safety, ethics, and landowner relations-hunter
relations, issued or honored by the department of environmental
conservation.

I'm NOT a civilian LEO, so please check into this before you make the trip. Since the event is being held on military proporty, you should be legal to bring a handgun.

What's worse is I was off that day, a rare occurrence.

It was fantastic! Sorry you missed it guys.  Lots of rounds downrange. The cadets went all out and put on a great day! Everybody had a blast!  Lots of good personalized instruction. The ratio was probably 2 cadets for every one shooter. Too bad the day ended just as I was getting used to being called Sir!
A big THANK YOU to all who made this happen.
And gut to dump brass through the shorty M16!
