I am new here to the boards. Just purchased my first AK's, both Norinco, a MAK90 and NHM-91 (RPK). I have been shooting at the Huntington Town Range which is slated to close at the end of the year. I shoot mostly C&R's and some FAL's. Unless something changes I will need to find another range. I live in Farmingdale, 5 minutes from the Huntington range so the closure really hurts. I have tried Calverton and find it borderline unsafe and neglected by the owner. How is Brookhaven with the AK's? Any suggestions?
                                  Thanks, Ken

Brookhaven

One of the range officers from there posts on here.  I can't remember his name.  Try a forum search on 'brookhaven' and see what comes up.  He seems very reasonable. IIRC they only let you load 5 rounds in the mag; no rapid fire; and only one target per board.

There are 2 of us here posting, myself and CAS. When either of us is working there is no mag limit as long as you aim at your target and keep the fire rate down. Another good thing about Brookhaven over Calverton is the roof over your head to protect from the sun. At Calverton you can stand and shoot were you have to sit at Brookhaven. Suppose to be a nice weekend so it might be busy.

There is a nice private shooting club, LIPSA, to which I belong.  It's only 10 minutes further than Calverton and is safe, well maintained, and has great facilities like plate racks and a Hogan's Alley.  You should look into that although membership is closed for the remainder of this year.

I shot a few times at Brookhave, real nice place and the roof is really appreciated. A friend is a member at LIPSA and that is one option with Brookhaven being the other.
Is there a yearly membership at Brookhaven? I remember the range officers there (6 - 8 years ago) were very professional and reasonable. I load at most 15 - 20 rnds if possible and I don't shoot rapid fire. I'll make a run out before the deer hunters show up. I shoot alot in the winter weather permitting.

When did they announce that Huntington is closing?  Not that I've been there in 10 years, but the loss still sucks.  Their policies definitely hurt the place, but the soccer mommies gave them no choice.  Classic catch 22.

The lease ran out and they won't renew it. Story is they offered 6 years on a new lease, the town wanted 20. They owner said forget it. I just started going there the last few years after I got my C&R license. 5 rounds at a time is all I needed.

IRWFO....   why don't you talk to Joe about becoming the webmaster, and making it a useful site. (see how I volunteer YOUR time and effort.)

It's real current... with the 2003 Winter Benchrest League schedule.

We could at least make the message board something more than a dumping ground for spam bots.

Brookhaven has yearly memberships, and well as daily rates. To be honest though, I don't remember what they are off the top of my head.

I've been too busy to even get this one up.

But if he'll throw me some bucks I'll do it.
