a texan friend of mine wanted to know if he can bring over an his airsoft pistol in NJ and give it as a gift to me |

Wow, we thought this be hard. Something like an airsoft is substantially identical to real thingy. |

Amazingly enough Airsoft guns are illegal in NYC, but not for the reason you think. NYC has some pretty strong laws on airguns -- if it's spring or air propelled it's not legal. However, the good airsoft guns are in fact battery powered -- meaning it's not an airgun. However, it's still a replica gun, and must be brightly colored and have a solidly plugged barrel in order to be legal. So it fails under that law. Moral of the story: everything fun is illegal in NYC. |

Here in NJ some stores has plastic toy guns on display that has the bright orange tip on the barrel. If Airsoft in NJ is treated as a firearm then law applies. NO folding stock, flash hider ( never heard of airsoft that flashes ) Hi caps and many many more |
There is a technicality there, which is that the airsoft gun is a spring-air device that is automatically cocked by a battery powered motor, instead of muscle power. |
I can't generalize for all airsoft guns, but the one I owned had a thing that looked like a miniature water wheel that flung the pellets out of the barrel. No spring propulsion. Others may differ. |
Was that one of the mini ones? The full size SMGs and Rifles use a partially toothed gear that draws a piston back on a spring and drops it. |
