Looks like our state is at it again.

They now want to spend $400,000 on a gun shot detection equiptment in high crime areas.

Interseting.
It was noted in the proposal that voilent crime has dropped 46%, but doesn't balance that figure against those who have left or been eliminated from the equation.
Funny, I always thought  "shots fired" came from people in the area reporting it....once again the state doesn't believe its citizens are competent to take care of themselfs.
If this were installed in an area as financially destitute as say Buffalo, the authorities could determine that shots were fired, but wouldn't have anybody available to investigate.
More intursion usually equals more money for a government agence somewhere.
There is also pending legislation to provide "stop-light" cameras. There only intent is catching someone who didn't clear the light before it changed red, so they can be fined.  They do the same money making operation every so often with sealbelts, cell phones, .....
OK I can see enforcement with running red lights especially in probimatic areas, but at least set up a patrol for personal interaction.

If people in high crime areas knew of a gun detection device in the neighborhood they would just mess with it all day and night. It would be like pulling the fire alarms on all the street corners in Harlem. The cops would get tired of it and it would just be a problem device and 400K down the tubes.

Here's a bright idea, improve the morale in NYPD regarding salaries! We're currently 2+ years without a contract and don't even come close in pay to our neighbors in Nassau Co.

Cops are your best "gun shot detection equipment".

+1 NYPD deserves the raise as they've done an outstanding job. Thanks to them I have to work less...We (FDNY-EMS) have also been without a contract for over 3 yrs (4 yrs in July). All eyes are on PERB..
