I've only been there a few times but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. B&J is about the same distance for me and the prices are better.

B&J is in Albany. They are the two main stores in upstate NY that will have a reasonable selection of military style rifles like ARs, AKs, FALs etc. The only other guy I know upstate is Frank I think in Marcy. He has a ton of stuff in his garage/shop and hits the major gunshows, good guy. SP10 probably knows of some other places, he seems to know every little gunshop upstate.

Albany ? damn to far for me to drive from Chautauqua County. I used a local guy in Jamestown, a gun broker for help with my first purchase recently. He's a good sort. Except his out of state contact left little to be desired. www.urban-armory.com. I'll buy from him again is just the hassel of having to use an FFL to get something in. Had even considered the idea of getting my own FFL and opening up shop on the top floor of my barn, dealing mostly in legal preban type stuff or posty.

flstfi- I usually buy stuff directly and have it shipped to my ffl and pay $ 20 for the transfer. I would guess that anything Buffalo Gun Center has you can find cheaper on the net and for me the travel expense more than offsets the shipping and $ 20 transfer fee.

I got my AR15 from Art's Gunshop in Gerry. Some other guy owns it now but the name is the same. Not a lot of stuff in the shop but he can order almost anything.
If you head towards Gerry from Jamestown on route 60 and go straight at the flashing light where the country fair is it's right there on the right just after the intersection

Most of the guys at the Buffalo Gun Center are pretty good to me.  Unfortunately, there's one guy there with a goatee and pretty short hair who always seems to have a chip on his shoulder.  He seems to work long hours and more often than not he is working.  Other than that one asshole, I think it's a good store and a good local resource for shooters.

Been there. Is my last resort place. They make you feel like your wasting their time and that they are doing you a huge favor just by agnologing you're there. I have only bought used from them and they are not flexible on used prices. Anytime I have taken a gun in for a possible trade I get offered about 20-30% of what I ended up selling it for on line. They also wont do transfers on any new gun that they can order themselves.

I haven't had any real problems at BGC yet.  I've made made three major purchases from them since discovering the shop but usually just end up getting ammo and accessories there for the most part.  If you have a pretty good idea of what you are looking for things should be fine.  When asking for advice, it really seems to depend on which guy you ask.  There was only one time they did not have an item I wanted to look at and it was because they were waiting on an order.  Good selection and all, but you pay for it.

The only negative experience I had was regarding a knife.  It was not one of the cheaper ones ($200) and I tried carrying it for a while that night at home to get used to it.  It fit me poorly and was not practical for me at all.  I returned it shortly after they opened the next day with the intent of using the credit towards a purchase of two separate knives that I knew were better suited to my needs.  The look on the owner's face was a real turn off when the employee explained the situation.  He inspected the knife, saw it was not damaged, and when I began to explain the issue directly to the owner he said something along the lines of, "I've already heard the whole sob story."  Right then and there I wanted to cancel the charges with my credit card company and leave the knife on the counter but I decided not to because I knew the situation was my fault although I did not see how I was complaining at all.  I had even told him I wouldn't hold it against him if he didn't want to take it back so his attitude really upset me.  When I pointed out the two knives I wanted instead and he realized that their combined total was more than that of the knife I was returning he seemed the slightest bit more pleasant and approved the exchange.  The whole experience left a sour taste in my mouth and I have begun to purchase elsewhere when I can.  Unfortunately BGC is the only place locally that appears to carry certain items and short of ordering things online there is no economical alternative to shopping there most times for me.  I just make sure I know what I want and need before I go in there now.

Gander Mountain told me they give 70% of book value on trades, better than the BGC EVER offered and that's after they (BGC) spend 30 min outback finger fucking it and racking the slide 300 times.

B&J's in Albany is a good shop.  I have gotten a milsurp and some COLT 20 orund mags from them recently.  Their collection of AR's has me drooling.  BGC does have that guy with an attitude.  The rest of them seem ok.  I do field service and when I can I do stop in for ammo.  About the only place I can get it in bulk in my travels.   Picked up 500 rounds of Federal XM193 there yesterday.

Same here. It seems like they are full of themselves over there and real cocky like you should be lucky they let you spend your money in there. I see things haven't changed. I haven't shopped there in like 6 years. I wouldn't give them the satisfaction.  Now if you go to Johnson's in Lockport, it is like a night and day difference. Just my .02 cents

i posted this in another topic but i figure i'll add my story here too.  I was in there a few days ago looking for a stripped lower for the j&t kit i plan on building.  i was talking to the older guy with grey hair.  i asked them if they had one, he said no.  I then asked if i could order one online and get it transfered to them, he said no.  Then he told me they'd be able to order one for me,  When i told him that i woulld like him to do that he had a look on his face like he wasn't expecting me to want to order one.  The guy then just walked away from me and started talking to the other guys working in there.  Nedless to say i was pissed, that was the first time i was ever treated badly in there but i'm going to try not to buy from them anymore.

People around the buffalo area.  Who do you use for ffl transfers.  i've been looking for someone to get the transfer for my lower from sbpercision.com.   I'm pretty much just looking to deal with someone who's nice and wont' make it too much of a hassel.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

As for Johnson's in lockport, where are they located?  What kind of selection do they have there.  Not really familiar with the lockport area so if you could give a street adress or a website or sometihng it would be great.

thanks

They refused to sell me any lowers, "liability", they said they couldn't be sure what I was going to build out of it and if it would be legal.

They didn't have any complete guns in stock either, in fact not much of anything in stock.  Gander Mtn has hurt them pretty bad.

There are a LOT of gunshops that have never even heard of the internet, and if you mention it to them, they bad talk it and tell you to get out of the store, if they have heard of it.  They can't beat the prices on the net so they would have to make it up with better customer service and they are not willing to do that.

I was in there earlier today.  They didn't have any lowers and as for rifles they're stock was ok.  They had an older looking m16/Ar15 and an M1a but other than that mostly shotguns and hunting rifles.  Luckily i found a lower for sale in long island and my brother was nice enough to go pick it up for me.

If they would utilize the web they might bring in more business.  It is sad because they have a great selection and stock just about everything you could want.  Some of the guys in that place are great to deal with if you can figure out who is into what.  I had one guy warm right up when I went in and asked about 1911's last week.  Before that he just always seemed a little bored when helping me.

didn't see their website linked yet
www.buffaloguncenter.com/

considering I live 2-3 miles from there I should go more often. I've only been there twice, on one day. I was doing some browsing for my dad for a trap gun.
maybe tomorrow on my way back from Galyans Dicks since it's in the same direction

I go there every couple of months or so, usually to pick up powder or primers and to look around. I've never had a problem. One guy spent about 1/2 hour with me just BS-ing about Garands and AKs. Their prices are kind of high though, and they don't negotiate much. I picked up a .44 mag at Johnson's for about $90 less than the BGC was selling it for.

Johnsons is touchy on their transfers.  They also know the gun laws for NY really well.  Buffalo Gun Center when I called them were kinda out of it, so I dont go there.  Neither of the two stores have lowers, I checked.

Anyone know a gun range in the Buffalo / North Tonawanda / Lockport  area that arent really picky on prebans?  I have a preban lower, but I dont want to go through any problems proving its preban.

What do you mean by "picky on prebans?" Do you mean a range in the area that will let you shoot without inspecting your firearm first ?
2/3/2005 6:47:11 PM EDT

Not that they like wont inspect it, but one that wont make me prove its a preban.  My lower reciever was made in 1989.  Its an Eagle Arms.  I just dont want any trouble is all.

I have a complete like new Stinger lower for sale if anyone is interested.

I do my transfers in No. Ton,  Terry Schultz charges $15.00 for long guns- he can't do pistols.

I used the indoor range on the Blvd. in No. Ton a while back.  They didn't even look at my ARs.

I was doing my transfers thru Johnson's but they now want 20-25 per gun and way more for handguns.  REAL NICE PEOPLE but,  The guys there really don't know much about weapons.  Had a Rommy SAR2 labeled as SAR3 in there 2 years ago and he argued with me that it was a SAR3.

They are confused about buying receivers to build kits- they call it manufacturing and you can only do a couple a year BS.

BGS,  My friends always comment on the arrogance and ignorance of the sales staff.

BGS is a Barrett dealer. They always have an M82 or two on display. Thats where mine came from. Gotta give them props for selling the evil black half-incher!!!!
