I just started my move to upstate NY (rennsalear county) from NJ. After transferring my driver's license, I drove over to the county clerk's office to get the ball rolling on my pistol permit. The clerk told me that I have to be a resident for a year before applying. I nearly wanted to puke! I read through all of the state laws, and no where is this mentioned. My family has lived in the area for twenty years (mother and aunt and uncle), so I dont't have a problem with references. I really hope this isn't the law. The clerk had a nasty attitude, saying, "you can't just walk into OUR state and get a permit!" I said that it's my state now, too! Does anyone know the answer, or who I can talk to about this. My wife and I have a good number of pistols sitting in a dealer safe in NJ. We are really getting into competition and it would suck not to be able to shoot for a year and a half! Please help!!!!! |

ialevy, welcome to NY first off. One baby step better than Jersey. Lots of counties do have some sort of 'residency' restrictions unfortunately. I did some searching for you, and last listing of Rennsalear County Clerks office was Joyce Sullivan, who handles pistol permits for Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola. Chances are you spoke with Joyce, and thats maybe as far as you'll get. Sorry couldnt be of more help, but I'll keep searching for you. EDITED TO ADD: Might want to check with the NYSRPA (New York State Rifle and Pistol Assoc.) www.nysrpa.org and their contact info is www.nysrpa.org/contact.htm |
