I thought this would be a useful thread.  Similar to the 'Ranges' thread, post the info on your local/favorite gun shops.  This should help people find good places to shop.

Please follow this format:

Name
Address (or approximation)
City, State

Rate the shop on the following criteria with a 1, 2 or 3 (poor, fair, good):

Selection of black rifles
Selection of other firearms
Attitude/Customer Service
Ammo selection
Shooting supplies selection
Prices (in general)
Gunsmith (Y or N)
Transfer fee (list the fee)

Total rating (add up the numbers you gave)

Lastly, provide your own commentary on the place.  Include highs and lows, why you like it why you hate it, etc.

Attitude/Cust Service: 3 (generally)
Ammo Selection: 3
Shooting supplies selection: 3
Prices: 2
Gunsmith: Yes (with a good reputation)
Transfer fee: $40 + $15 NCICS

Overall score: 17

Overall, I think this is a good place to shop.  Their prices are pretty much MSRP but, they are sometimes willing to knock a little off, especially on used guns.  Also, they usually give you 10% off all supplies you purchase with a new gun.  (ammo, cleaning stuff, cases)  I think that's a nice gesture.

Their selection of black rifles is good but consists primarily of Bushmaster.  They have recently started stocking some Eagle AR10's though which is cool.  They also usually have at least one M1A and a couple of 'tactical' type shotguns.

The rest of their selection is pretty good although somewhat light in bolt actions.  Shotguns and used rifles take up the bulk of the rack space.  They have a very decent handgun selection.  They are a big time Kimber dealer as well as heavily stocked in Sig, Glock, Beretta, Smith, Ruger, etc.  Basically most of what you want.  They also special order anything and usually get it within a week.

They have a lot of other supplies as well as an extensive fishing and hunting department.  They are also a Liberty safe distributor.

Overall, I recommend them.

Selection of black rifles: 1
Selection of other firearms: 3
Attitude/Cust Service: 1
Ammo Selection: 2
Shooting supplies selection: 2

Gunsmith: Not sure but don't think so
Transfer fee: unsure but very close if not the same as Sportsmen's Center

Overall score: 11

Harry's has a very large selection of shotguns and an equally impressive selection of bolt action rifles.  However, their black rifle selection is poor.  They usually only have one or two Armalites of some model.  Sometimes an HK SL8.  Very poor in general selection in this area.  Ammo selection is pretty good for 'hunters', they have a ton of stuff.  However, little to no .223 'mass qty' stuff like Am Eagle, Winchester, whatever.  Fed Gold Medal of any type is special order only.

The real problem with Harry's is the attitude behind the gun counter.  It is rare that you get one of the nice guys.  (there are two, I believe)  Usually you get one of the 'I am going to tell you what you know about guns' guys or the ones that are just plain pissed that you bothered them.  The place does a lot of volume in business and has definitely developed the 'I really don't need your business' attitude.  For example, they will not show you a long gun without presenting your FID card first.  They will not show you a handgun without a purchase permit in hand.

Other than guns, they have lots of other stuff.  From knives to binocs to flashlights to an extensive night vision assortment.

Overall, they have a lot of stuff that you might want to buy.  If you can go in, get it and come out without talking to anyone, they can provide stuff you might need.

I've been goin to Bob's for ages...he's great. He only gets a 2 in customer service because he's got a guy working there that needs both hands to find his posterior. He's not a bad guy, but I seem to have an inordinate amount of issues dealing with him (which Bob always takes care of). Bob himself is the cat's ass, though. He's great, and you can haggle with him, especially on the used stuff. If that other guy weren't there (or if he stayed in the back and handled inventory and didn't do any customer stuff), Bob's would get a 3 in a heartbeat.

His selection's pretty good as well. Piles of old M1 Carbines, a handful of Garands, usually 3 or 4 AR's, a couple of AR10's, a smallish but nice handgun collection, and racks and racks of hunting rifles and shotguns. He usually has a couple of rare birds in there too, from time to time (He's got an H&K 911 on the wall at the moment, and a couple of M1A's).

His ammo is more geared towards the area (hunting, commerical stuff), but he usually has a couple crates of surplus .223 and .308 around if you ask.

He's basically your small town gunstore, but man, he's got quite the rifle collection. Transfers are generally hassle-free (especially if you're not buying new stuff that he could order; he's got to make a living too), and quick. He'll do the whole fax thing first to get the ball rolling instead of demanding an ink FFL up front.

It's more of an all-around place. They usually have 3 or 4 AR's in stock, and a couple pre-bans as well (They have a NIB M76 valmet there right now...I need that like I need another hole in my head, so I haven't picked it up). They also have a lot of hunting rifles and shotguns, and a pretty nice set of handguns; they're official dealers for all sorts of vendors. Lots of equipment and supplies for hunters and sportsmen. Their attitude is pretty good, but their service is kind of eh...I'll spend 10 minutes trying to flag down someone to ask them a question at times. I usually stop by there once or twice a month to see if they have anything interesting in. They also have a large air/bb gun selection, as well as paintball stuff.

You must be talking about my buddy Alan.  Bob and Betty are great.  I hang out there almost on a weekly basis.  Last year I got a preban Colt for $999 there.  Also it is exit 123 on the quickway northbound.  The shop is at the second light after the exit on the right hand side.  Southbound, you get off at exit 124 and make a right at the light and then make a left at the next light and continue until you get to the second light.  Also the $20 transfer fee is for regular customers.  It is $25 for everyone else.  He will get you decent deals on Bushmasters and Armalites.  For anybody that wants to order from Pete at Legal Transfers, his FFL is on file there.

Yep, that's the place..he's great.

Yah, he had a NIB Steyr Aug not too long ago...he was about to call me and tell me he got one, but it went too quickly. I already have one anyway, so no big loss

He knows I go for the rarer evil black rifle stuff, so if he gets something juicy, he usually lets me know about it.

I can't recommend him enough.

Great place. Not many Black rifles but they always at least one, mostly AKs but I saw a Colt AR15 recently. They have alot of other guns though.

Tons of reloading supplies. All kinds of cleaning stuff. Dewey rods too.

The prices could be better but its the best Ive seen in this area.

The customer service is great though. I think the weekly hours are noon to 5.

Good selection of black rifles except they are hard to see because the shop is about the size of my Kitchen. Some other guns, mostly shotguns.

He says he specializes in Military stuff.

Some ammo. Just the normal stuff, nothing exotic.

No handguns that I could see. There might be some...

No shooting supplies beyond the basic cleaner lube etc.

Customer service isnt great. You have to call ahead of time because he doesnt keep regular hours. He isnt stupid though, just not there all the time.

This is THE place to go for bulk cleaning stuff and surplus ammo cans etc. You can get pint jars of Hoppes #9 for $8.99 and spray bottles of CLP for $10.99.

Bought my first ammo can here. Its better than mail order because you can pick out the best ones.

Good selection of "huntin' stuff" and the prices are very competitive. Last time I knew Rochester had finally dropped the dumbass politically correct restrictions on the pistols they would sell and were carrying Glocks, 1911s, berettas etc in addition to wheel guns and .22s. Last I knew Buffalo also carried "combat" pistols also. Very competitive prices, no long guns of any real interest outside of hunters. Carry holsters, but mostly inexpensive nylon Uncle Mike's types.

Generally pleasant guys to shoot the BS with. They have the occaissional Bushy, Garand VEPR etc. Handgun prices are outrageous, though I bought a shotgun there earlier this year at a great price. They charge $ 50 for transfer (twice the going rate in the area) and acted like jerks the one time I asked them to do it (Um hello it's not like they had an FN sniper rifle in their racks that I was not buying).

I was just in there for the first time a couple weeks ago, my dad was looking for a new trap gun
I saw an AK variant, I think  Romanian SAR1, and numerous AR variants in the new section. Saw a post ban Uzi variant in the new section.
in the used section saw a few WW2 era rifles in decent shape, normal C&R types, nagants, mausers etc
almost forgot, also saw a Barret and another .50, I think an AR50
I think I saw an M1 and an M1 carbine too. didn't get over to the handgun section
Plenty of staff on hand. Lots of ammo, didn't get a good look at prices but some of the guns seemed high, but the ammo seemed as good as some of the mail order places

Those baboons at American Outdoor Sports or whatever its called in Melville act like you spit in their hair when you go there.
I did get a pellet gun repair done at Benson's in Coram and would recommend them just based on being treated like a regular customer for a truly inexpensive repair job.  Anyone else?

This is the best shop for black rifles in CNY that I am aware of. Usually several ARs, other black rifles on the shelf. AR50 usually in stock. New stuff is close to retail, but you can find some real bargins in the used gun sections, like an as-new BM M4A2 postban for $695 tax included (I passed this on to a friend of mine who bought the gun). Also found my SR-25 in this shop for a great price...

I usually take the hour+ drive once a month or so to check this shop out.

Gerry NY 14740

I bought my AR15 from him back when Art still owned it.
not a large selection of stuff in stock, kind of disappointing in some respects, but they'll be glad to order stuff.
I was there today, seemed like they have close to one of each type of Ruger handgun, but other than that and a couple thompson contenders that was it for handguns. Rifle selection was pretty much limited to Rugers. Shotguns appeared to be mostly remingont 870s but there were some other types too.
Although the stock is limited they can order just about anything. I ordered my bushmaster through this store when it was still owned by Art, and just recently ordered a revolver from EMF. Took 6 days for the revolver to arrive, ordered on Thursday and was in the following wednesday and that included EMF waiting for his FFL to be mailed to them.
New owner is as nice and friendly as the previous and if you don't mind waiting for the gun to be ordered and you're in the area it's not a bad choice.
Fairly sure they still have a gunsmith, at least for a while the father of my friend's wife was the gunsmith for this store, no idea if he still is.

There were NO cool semi-auto long guns, but a good selection of hunting rifles and shotguns and the prices seemed. They did carry an okay, but not great selection of pistols. They had Glocks, Kel-Tecs, some Berettas, some 1911s in a display case that a fat guy stood in front of the whole time and S&W and Ruger. The prices on pistols seemed competitive, but they did not stock ANY of the small Glocks, only full-size and compact pistols.

There was no military surplus that I saw though they did have some Black Hills ammo, there was an okay selection of accessories, though the holster selection was only low end stuff.

There was an ad about their having a gunsmith that did custom work there but I didn't ask any questions about it.

Steve the owner is ok, nice guy, willing to answer all questions and help.  They are usually MSRP on prices.  Can't say I saw any deals to be had.  Steve hosts the local NYS Hunter Safety Course (10 Hour couse) at no charge.

Ziggy - gunsmith - , is alright as long as you don't ask for his opinion and you don't give him yours.  You will never accomplish anything because he will chew your ear off and you will not get any shooting in.

Whatever you do, don't use them as an FFL. Ziggy feels like it's not worth his time, charges $45, just as if you were getting some gunsmith work done by him.  Tells me it takes an hour to do one transfer.  My biggest mistake was have them transfer two Ar-15 lowers.  Almost bought a third for what I spent on FFL charge and NICS.  I found a few local FFL's that would do it for $20 +/- a few dollars.

I go there to shoot because it's 5 minutes from the house.  I'm looking for another range to add a change.  Bought my first gun there.

One more thing, they don't want you bring your own ammo.  They want you to buy their ammo because as Ziggy put's it, it pays for the up keep of the range.  There is a 75% mark up on their ammo compared to say a Wally World for pistol ammo.

They seem to have some Bushmasters on the rack these days.  I've seen two.  Not a large selection by any means, approx 20 long arms and about 30 pistols with a 50/50 mix of revolvers and semi auto's.

This is all IMHO and YMMV.

COLLECTOR RIFLE & AMMO INC [ AKA CHARLIE-RED] I HAVE BEEN TO THAT SHOP ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND I RATE THE BLACK RIFLE SELECTION AS A 3+ AND PRICES ARE THE BEST I FOUND AND I WENT LOOKING,  OTHER FIREARMS AT A 3+ ALONG WITH THE MOST USED GUNS I'VE SEEN ONE STORE SO FAR. ATTITUDE 2 TO 3 DEPENDING ON CUSTOMER. AMMO IS ALSO A 3+ CLOSER TO 4. I FIND HIS AMMO PRICES AND SELECTION TO BE THE BEST AROUND. I'VE NEEDED SOME HARD TO FIND AMMO AND HE HAD THEM. CASE PRICES WERE GREAT TOO. NOW THAT THE STORE HAS BEEN EXPANDED HE IS ABLE TO DISPLAY HUNDREDS OF GUNS AND HIS TALENT WITH COMING UP WITH HARD TO GET STUFF IS INCREDIBLE.

I have been going to Chucky's for many years now.
He does a good selection of black rifles and surplus, but he will rape you on military ammo.
He wanted to charge me $12.00 for a surplus 8mm bandalero (70rds) where every one else charges $4-$6. His transfer costs will make your head spin with his formula. He can be a grouch but he is my FFL and I love him just the same. Through the years I have spent over 9K on rifles and handguns from him.

I haven't read the other posts yet, cause I wanted to vent.  The closest stores near me (south shore) are.
A) LI Outdoorsman in Rockville Center.  Run by a stunning women named Donna.  If you want a transfer she charges 35 and 'tax' on the price of the rifle.  ZERO black rifles in stock.  She adds roughly 25% to anything you want and she orders.  E.g. I walk in with a catalogue (letting her know that I could order it if i wanted, but she is so hot i can't resist) and I tell her what I want and she orders it AND STILL adds on her 25%.  MY saiga 223 cost my 325 from her.  Never Again.

B) T and T tactical on Jericho Tpke.  Lots of Black Rifles.  He takes a look at a rifle, and however cool it looks, that's how much he adds on to the price.  You can 'snag' an sks for 400 there (hold laughter).  ZERO black rifle parts accesories knowledge, etc.  NOT WORTH A DAMN.

C) Large store in Farmingdale by SUNY/Republic airport.  Not worth a damn for black rifles, pure hunting shop.

D)Coliseum gun traders in uniondale.  This is one of those places, where if you come in and ask about an AR or a Mini, they give you the sneer that says "I don't deal in semi-auto's son".  These are old times who look like they stick tokentucy rifles andsingle action rugers.  Their newest meanest blackest gun would be a 10/22!

E)Galyans at Roosevelt field.  Bunch of morons.  great ammo prices, target prices, cleaning supplies. no black rifles, HUGE accesory section, but not for black rifles.  Idiots work there.

Sports authority in westbury.  idiots, more airsoft than rifles.  no black rifles, horrible ammo prices.  great case selection, though lots of targets too.

I pray three times a day.  Once for our country.  Once for our troops. and once for a shop where I can hang out all weekend, spend all my money, be welcomed with a smile and first-name, and be surrounded by black rifles, every accesroy and part known to man, AR15's up the walls and those who love them.

Chopperjoe,
Have you tried the store on Babylon Tpke in Merrick- wondered about your impressions (-:
I have friends at Coliseum, but I think you summarized it succinctly.  Although many here will flame me for the following, but I LIKE Marty's T and T in Seaford, and the little guy isn't bad re: ARs there.  Overall, we need a Gander Mountain, or a Bass Pro Shops, or a Cabelas on the island, hell, maybe even a Dicks!  I did get good service once at a shop in Coram, but again I do not think there is an EBR in the whole joint.

That is simply not true.
They have Bushmasters, FALs, AR10s, Beowulfs, L1A1s, Prebans, Springfield White Feather M1As, and then some.
They have an extensive collection of Black Rifles, and I've used them many times.

Maybe what you say was true many years ago.
But for the past three years, no.

For those of you in the central NY area, I am an FFL and would be happy to do any transfers you might need. Current rates are $15 per long gun, $ 20 per USED handgun; if its  a NEW handgun, I need to tack on another $15 due to the costs involved with travelling to the nearest CoBis collection site ( 3 hour round trip ) or mailing the cases in certified mail, return receipt as I have to do ( sorry, but those are expenses I DO have to pass along ) .....I keep a minimal amount of other stuff on hand, but if its something that a persons going to want on a regular basis and wont get stuck on the shelf for years on end ( as has happened in the past ), then I'll stock it for you.

Lastly, provide your own commentary on the place. Include highs and lows, why you like it why you hate it, etc.
Phil the owner knows his stuff and never steered me the wrong way EVER...My only problem is there are too many toys that I want every time I go in there...and to make things worse he always has to show me the new stuff that came in that I might like....DAMN HIM!!!

phil is the shit!!   VERY friendly and great prices!

T&T Seaford is a good store. They are knowledgeable and friendly, unlike most places on the island. It's the only place I shop.

They T&Ts are ok, depends on what time of the month you go there though.  Stan is a real serious guy but he warms up when you start talking about M1As.  His son Hank at the Seaford store is a great guy, just gave me a great price on Remington 700 PSS.

Coliseum Gun Traders had some black rifles, I was surprised to see an HK SL-8 there.  They did have some ACOGs though, I picked up a TA31F there.  They had a few mini ACOGs, a 31A and a TA01 when I picked mine up.
