11 Days out and counting.
Reports are looking good for Central Zone. I will be hunting in Meridian and Caddo Mills.

Don't get a whole lot of birds at our place here in Burnet so I usually end up waiting until south zone opens and hunt out near Poth and then outside of Jourdanton at my friends places. Wasn't very good out by Poth last year so we may just stay at the other place where we had better luck. Plus we see more ring necks there.
Any good deals on 20 gauge shells? I need to find some for my son to hunt this year. |

I need to find some for my son to hunt this year. I was at Cabela's and they had 12 and 20 gauge shells, 250 per case for $59.99 IDK if that's good or not because I don't shoot much shotgun. Out of curiosity, what do you guys do with the doves? I can't imagine they have enough meat to eat. Do you just shoot them for population control? |

We wrap the breasts around a slice of jalapeño and onion, wrap all of that in bacon, special wine marinade/jalapeño-kiwi jelly glaze, and grill them them up. Makes for some good eating with friends and cold beer. |

I ordered a Montefeltro the other day. Going to see if I can unload faster than my old 870 pump....lol. You guys know they fly fast and high in Central Texas. I'll be in a few places around the Waco area. I'll be just north of you around West and at my cousin's near Carl's Corner. |

Unfortunately, I've got no land down here in the Hill Country to hunt on, and I am not doing the whole craigslist day lease thing for another season. Looks like I'm sitting this season out boys TPWD TPWD has public hunting areas with permit. Just research the area you are interested in...lots of idiots in some spots. |

Huh, had no idea we actually had public hunting areas! You learn something new every day. Nothing around Kerrville that allows dove, but I'll definitely be keeping this in mind. |
|
I'll be up at the LBJ Grasslands again this year. Last season I saw more dove than I had in the previous 10 years combined, but they hold in the trees and on power lines a lot. There is very little hunting pressure so there isn't anything to move them. I will be taking my fishing gear- like always. |

I'll be hunting in Coryell County, white wings galore. This rain may mess things up, though. Not complaining. A good Texan never complains about rain. I used to hunt between Gatesville and Mosheim off 215. You could set your watch to the dove mass fly over every evening. It would be like a mad house for about 30 minutes. You couldn't get the gun loaded fast enough. Sometime I would just shove one shell in and shoot...lol. |

What choke do you guys recommend for a 20g? I used modified last year but recently found my full choke. Not sure if this got answered - I use cylinder or improved cylinder and have had great success. I am not a good enough shot for full and I don't want to tenderize the bird with shot if I were. |

I should be up at one of the units on the LBJ Grasslands Saturday morning. I will let everyone know if I see any birds. I saw more last year than in the last 10 years combined, so there is hope. The biggest issue up there is the lack of hunting pressure. I have spent all day on various units and never see anyone else. |

I totally want to scope those fishing holes like you mentioned. |

Tons of birds... Also shot two hogs just at first light. Close to two hundred pounds each. About fifteen others escaped waiting for another day.... |

Quoted:
We saw about forty hogs this morning, two deer, and more jackrabbits than I can count Rabbits and rats lead the game count around here... Living on the farm, letting the two Killers out in the morning and watching the rat hunts are funny as all get out. They catch several every day. |

We have lots of jack rabbits and deer not as many hogs or coyotes but enough to hunt. |

Dove breast is delicious!
