So I have a unique problem that I have been waiting my whole life for. We just bought a new house and I now have a gun room. It's in the fully finished basement with no windows. I plan on having an area for reloading, one for working on guns/ cleaning and I build fishing poles so an area for that. My question to the group is, if you had a 15x17 foot room what all would you put in it? So far what I'm thinking is
Two walls with full length work benches on them, shelving above one and cabinets above the other with storage below both full wall of slatwall for displaying guns large flatscreen TV with speakers throughout the room recliner computer work station cabinet for storing ammo Security is covered. Those are my ideas. If you had this same problem what you do? I'm more looking for ideas on cool ideas or handy things I may not have heard of. Also would like to know what the most useful thing you have in your gun area. Budget is somewhat of an issue but I'm not too worried about it. If something is too expensive but also something I really want, then I'll just save up and get it. We aren't moving any time soon so I want to do this right the first time. Ready go. |

Sounds like a great problem to have. Good lighting is going to be critical especially without windows in the room.
One thing I really like in my reloading area is the ability to swap out different reloading units. My bench is only 6' long though so I have one location for a press with a modular type mounting system where I can set up my single stage press or the progressive press and then mount a vice in the same spot for light gun maintenance jobs. Since I split our home office with my wife, I made is so my reloading gear can easily come off the bench and be tucked away in a cabinet for a cleaner look when I'm not using it. I have a tall cabinet that holds my Hornady LNL AP press with the case feeder attached. Now you may not need or want to put up your gear when not in use since you have the full use of the room BUT, may I suggest some sort of modular mounting system for your gear. I feel this really makes the bench more flexible. It could be used on your gun maintenance bench as well as the fishing rod bench. This guy uses T-tracks embedded in the tops of his bench and then mounts the equipment to either metal plates or heavy plywood plates as required. This allows the press to be put at any spot along the bench or to set up multiple stations for different tasks. Take a look at how a system like this would work: http://ultimatereloader.com/2011/03/27/the-new-reloading-bench-system-at-ultimate-reloader/ ETA - heavy benches, and tie the top to wall to minimize movement when reloading. |

I don't have any personal input, but this is an awesome thread:

I thought basements were not a good thing in TX due to soil conditions but you may not be here.
I didn't see it mentioned so: ventilation and Fire safety(?). Just my safety Sam kicking in! I'm jealous cause we're not moving and my little space will always be the doghouse. |

Google fu turned up these ideas...metric shit ton! Options are as big as your check book!

I'm starting planning on my gun room. I looked at slatwall, but I think I'm going to go with GallowTech Wall Racks. If I'm feeling super James Bond-y, I might add a Murphy Door. |

Dehumidifier set up over a floor drain or sump pump area, (native yankee here). Some are very loud. I slept to the sound of one as a kid. Are you in Texas? Not currently. Much family lives there and we will probably end up there with the family but currently we are up in the Pacific Northwest. |

if you can run the slat wall from top to bottom on all the walls it will are the room look much nicer. Also the cost is not that much when you add it all up. You can also get it with a wood grain finish that would make it look much nicer then the paint grade I really like slatwall. I'm looking to see if I can find some from a business that has closed down and pick it up cheap. |

I have a murphy door that hides the secure door to the room. They are great. I'm looking at getting the magnetic lock and fingerprint reader to open the murphy door but $$$$. Maybe someday. |

My gun room/office/man cave is currently filled with woomen's clutter. OK, some of it is mine. I was outnumbered up to 4-1 until last January. I am slowly reclaiming my gender neutral home enviroment.
There are other threads on reloading areas that show some great ideas. Most of those folks have more bubble gum money than I do. |

Is it one of the Murphy doors from that link? How much of a pain was it to install? I showed the Murphy door to MrsCheShirt and said we should install them on all the 1st floor rooms so anyone breaking in will see a den, kitchen, living room and then a hall full of bookcases and a bathroom. Weirdly, she was OK with the idea. |

If you have average woodworking and construction skills, a friend and some beer you should be able to easily do it in a day or so. |
