Give me your two cents about people who insist on driving only in the left lane. (either interstates or wide open four lane roads). Be kind, I'm still red from the last thread I opined upon :)-
My old drivers-ed teacher/basketball coach would have failed me if I stayed in the left lane longer than the time needed to pass a slower vehicle. |

Be kind, I'm still red from the last thread I opined upon :)- My old drivers-ed teacher/basketball coach would have failed me if I stayed in the left lane longer than the time needed to pass a slower vehicle. In general, most people suck at driving and have forgotten the laws/rules of the road. I also believe most drivers don't understand physics. |
| OK, I'll chime in. I am 68, got my original license in Massachusetts, got to Texas in 1980, never looked back. The rule of the road that was pounded into us when learning to drive was "keep right except to pass". I still follow that and will always drop back to the right until I come up to the next vehicle I plan to pass. Passing on the right is dangerous. Hogging the left lane cause others to do stupid stuff. To me, those that drive in the left lane seem totally oblivious to the fact that traffic is piling up behind them, folks are passing on the right and there is nothing ahead of them. Ignorant and stupid! OK, rant over! |
|
Idiots are the ones that don't understand flash to pass. If I 'm the the left lane passing a string of cars and you want to go past me, flash your lights, I'll throw on my signal and get over first chance I can. I've driven all over the world, Central Texas drivers SUCK, they have no idea what they are doing behind the wheel.
And don't get me started about the inbred truck drivers around here. |
|
Well seems most drivers in town (30 years around Houston and 5 across DFW) drivers like to squat in the left lane. Knocking on the back door (pull close for a moment) and falling back seems to get most upset and waving madly and shakin their phone camera at you when they are not talking or texting on it.
I've had it and going to get a dashcam to record these idiots. Maybe just post them to youtube or somewhere. |

Highways, stick to the right. Urban areas not so much. I'll go to whichever lane I need to be in to turn or whichever lane is moving along the fastest.
One of the things that drives me nuts is when you are on a narrow 2 lane highway (certain parts of Hwy 281 between San Antonio and Johnson City) and someone is driving 10mph or so under the speed limit causing traffic to back up. Then when you get to one of the passing lane areas they stay to the left even though there are signs stating for slower traffic to keep right! Of course there are also people I don't understand that feel they have to be in the left lane no matter what. I do a lot of driving and it's amazing how many people I see get onto a highway and go all the way over to the left lane even though there was no traffic in the right or middle lane. Used to see it a lot from people with Oklahoma and Louisiana state plates so I wondered if they just had different driving habits there or just didn't know their left from their right.

The drivers that get under my skin as much as left lane huggers.....
The jackwads that speed up when you try to pass them on a 2 lane highway. C'MON! I follow behind for like 2 miles for an opening to pass your slow ass then suddenly you realize you're driving 15mph under the speed limit as I try to pass you and try to keep up?! |

I agree, the other driver that gets my goat is someone who unprovoked (i'm not following too close) pulls over on the shoulder (two lane road) and wants me to pass them.. First of all that is illegal, secondly, I don't like all of the crap their tires throw up from the shoulder. If I want to pass you, I have a V8 and will pass you! |

Same thoughts as you guys but once while vacationing in LA our son was there for work so he picked us up at the hotel and drove us to Santa monica for dinner. I was so stoked I rented a car the next year so I could drive in LA.
It was amazing. I'm getting onto the freeway to go to Dizzeyland but the lanes are all packed, moving at 50 or so. The minute I hit my blinking this huge hole opens up, I get in and away we go. Everybody signals, makes their move whatever it is and things move forward. I used to have a lot of reps call on me and they all complained about what poor drivers there were in Texas. I agree. |
|
I was born and raised in Southern California for 38 years before escaping to Texas. I don't know when that happened but In all the years I was in So Cal if you dared turn on your blinker then any gap that was available will be closed buy the guy speeding up so you cant get in front of them. And to see a freeway at 50 there was it Midnight to about 5 am ? Most any one within 50 miles of LA are at a crawl any other times. Unless things have changed in the last 8 years. I have not been back.

At one time, that was considered polite and "Driving Friendly" (The Texas Way) -perhaps you are closer to them than you think you are? Texas (back in the 60's), used to be one of the few states that had large paved shoulders, an expense most other states did not bother with. I hate when semi-trucks decide to take both lanes, and drive next to each other at 10-15 MPH under the speed limit. As for left lane driving, It does not bother me that people drive in the left lane as long as they are doing the speed limit AND if someone comes up behind them, they move over and let them pass. (Of course, that requires people to pay attention to what is going on around them). OTOH, I believe some people think they are doing some kind of public service by slowing down others. However, I hate when I am in the right lane and someone comes up on my ass, changes to the left lane, then decides to go the same speed as me once they get next to me, which forces me to step on the brake to get behind them to go past someone in the right lane going slower. ETA: another thing that chaps my ass is people that will ride my ass, I let them pass, then, when they are in front of me, they decide they really don't wanna go that fast when they are in the lead, so they slow down. - It's like, WTF? you wanted to go fast a minute ago...... |
|
I noticed once I got a slightly lifted F150 with bigger tires, this became far less of a problem for me.
When I get up on some jackwagon doddling in the left lane.... they get over pretty quick. If they don't get the message a quick flash of the brights usually gets them off their phone and over a lane. I had hell when I drove a miata. Zero respect. |

I see left lane drivers every day for a small part of my drive. Most of my commute is with all lanes completely full.

It was a regular thing 15-20 years ago when I lived in rural Denton county. Speed limit's 70. If I'm coming up behind someone, they'd scoot over. If someone came up behind me, I'd do the same. Seemed like a pretty simple concept regardless of what speed everyone was going. It just happened. But lots of rural Denton county has since turned into subdivisions, Fuzzy's Tacos, and Starbucks now, so common courtesy has since yielded to road-raging assholes and furriners. |

I had a couple people do that the first time I came to Texas in 2003 (for Gunstock in Waco); folks would pull over onto the shoulder so I could pass. Thought it was pretty cool. |

| The only thing that irritates me about the left lane is when I am doing 5-10 over in it, passing another car or string of them, and some lifted brodozer decides he wants to ride my ass as I am passing. Just because I am speeding and passing, doesn't mean i have to do it at the speed you want. Just wait and I'll move over directly. |

Quoted: Totally agree, but not miles ahead of the turn, move to the left when appropriate to make the turn. Quoted: Quoted: Bad on the interstates. Not so bad on surface streets - gotta be in the left lane to make a left turn. Totally agree, but not miles ahead of the turn, move to the left when appropriate to make the turn. On the interstate, its usually 18 wheelers stacked in the right lane, or wide open. Either way, I hug the left lane mostly. Sorry if it hurts anyone's feels. The only time someone was an asshole about it, was 11:00 PM on I-20 near Monroe, LA as I was heading for an all night drive to Florida. I was the only one on the road within a couple miles. Guy in a lifted diesel truck got up on my ass and left his brights on, and his off-road LED light bars. |

I have to agree with you. I've had people do that half a mile from the plant entrance and slow down to where I'm forced to pass only to have to immediately slow down to turn. Then they get mad at me when I didn't even want to pass in the first place. |
