So I'm finding myself with less and less time to make the drive to caddo grasslands to try any predator hunting. I've seen bobcats and heard plenty of coyotes there, but the drive is making it hard to hit consistently and get a chance to learn/practice the skills. Does anyone know of any hunting opportunities in the more rural parts of Rockwall county (or the bits of Hunt and Kaufman counties bordering it) where I could do some coyote/bobcat/whatever hunting? Hell, I'd almost settle for somewhere with a known population of predators where I could just practice calling.
I've driven around the southeastern bit of the county (McClendon-Chisolm area) and a lot of that property LOOKS promising. On that note, how do you even go about approaching private property owners with something like this. I'm not really comfortable just walking up to someones house and saying "hey, mind if i shoot animals here". Maybe that's what I'll have to do, but any tips from people that have been successful would be appreciated. anyway, thanks. feel free to PM me. if you have property and want to go shooting to ensure I'm not a tool, I'm up for it. -bg74 |
| I'm going to wind up having to end at least one coyote that keeps coming up near the house. Missed him the last few weekends but one day he's pay for the kids cat they took right after we moved in. If I have them within a mile or so of southern junction I know other folks close by do. Maybe see if you can find out who owns some of these large areas where it looks like the harvest hay and ask them. |
| They are pretty thick on the north side of Rockwall. They keep the cats and small dogs cleared out in my neighborhood. Only on an acre here, but my 22 suppressor should clear any day now. Now, if I can find a way to draw them in without freaking out the neighbors. |
| I grew up in the south of the county, and there are plenty of coyotes. But getting far enough away from a housing development to shoot them these days in a challenge. Just look at Google Earth imagery of the county. Best bet might be to take up the bow and/or shotgun and rimfire. And maybe it wouldn't hurt to visit some of the McMansions in Heath and elsewhere to pitch free coyote disposal. |
