Hey guys,

So, I'm wanting to replace the flooring in some of the major areas of my house (living room, dining room, 3 bedrooms). I want to re-do the carpet in the bedrooms and put down the wood-looking tile in the living and dining room. My questions are mostly related to price...

The first bid we got for the flooring is $9,500.00. Price breakdown is as follows:

Carpet (Pedigree Nylon Carpet with Healthier Living 1/2 Pad): $4.49/sq foot - This is take up and disposal of old carpet and install of the new.

Tile (Porcelain 6x24): $7.67/sq foot - This is grouted (with fusion pro grout), installed, etc.

To me, this sounds like a shit ton of money. 768 sq/foot is what we are tiling, and they are charging $2,296 for labor alone...All of that being said, I haven't ever done flooring before and I'm a first time homeowner, what say the hive?

Thanks!

Rule of thumb is three bids...especially on a project that expensive. Seems a little high to me as well. Where are you?

Check with Costco. They have contractors that they a real strict about quality. NO MONEY UP FRONT.

Does this include taking up baseboards, replacing quarter round, picking up toilets/replacing the ring, etc? The nickel and dime stuff is the killer.  If you're in the position,  ask about a cash price.  That's what I did.  Frankly,  the quote doesn't sound too bad.  Probably Home Depot level prices.  But... you get what you pay for and the last thing you want is a shitty job.

Yes, this includes the baseboard work. I definitely don't want a shitty job and this company gets really high ratings, I was just surprised when I got the estimate. I'll get a couple more and see what happens.

I've got Costco as another opinion, but their sales rep has been a little slow to get back with us.
