I'm interviewing for work in Brownsville, TX next month. And, I will be looking at a few other places in TX to work.
NY/NJ transplant to FL and now maybe TX. Before you get on my case about turning the state blue let me tell you a little about myself. I'm very conservative, own NFA weapons (including a 40mm M203), own a 5 ton military truck, my pick up truck has the Sons of Liberty Flag and Bonnie Blue Flag on it, and I'm in the military with 3 tours to OEF. Plus, if TX secedes from the Union I'm ready to give up my commission and US passport to become a Texan. If that isn't good enough for TX maybe I don't belong anywhere in America these days.
My plan is to move to TX someday and get a small 5 to 20 acre ranch type property. I have about 200k budget for the house/land. I know it isn't much but if I can find a small place with some land I'd be a very happy man. How is it down there in Brownsville? Any constructive suggestions? |

With the thousands of aliens crossing, your 5-20 acres will get trampled. Go visit first. You will either love it or hate it. Is it not safe? It is close to the border. No matter where I buy my next home it will have a fence around my home, surveillance and an alarm. |

Brownsville is way to close to the border for comfort. As others have said, you will likely be overrun by illegals and cartel members. Frankly it just isn't very safe, high crime and a fairly dismal place. Lots of poverty, lots of people sponging off welfare. Lots of drugs. Lots of better places to go than there.

Where did you buy the tarp cover?
I have a deuce and don't know where to buy canvas Regarding Brownsville, I would LOVE to have more people like you living on the border, but that is a selfish commentary on my part. Personally I would be miserable down there. I had a lease near Del Rio for years and I had to put a sign on the door of the bunk house that said "Close The Door As You Leave" in Spanish since the illegals slept in it more than I did. Threw old sheets on the beds. The place was like a damn hotel for them until I couldn't take it anymore. Aliens walking thru my lease all day scaring off the deer and birds. It's just a limitless migration of people. |

My bed is 14 x 8. I will fence in my house no matter where I live. Not my entire land but my house will be secure. I will also have cameras and more. If they climb over or cut through they will be met by dogs or me. I don't want to hurt anyone but if they get passed my fence with posted signs they are a threat as far as I'm concerned. It will be set up like a COP. If TX law is anything like FL I'll feel pretty safe. |

There are better parts of Texas than Brownsville, but let me be the first one to say "Welcome to Texas". You sound like you might like our beautiful State. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-m9-rhGYaeOQ/UFfRArENaGI/AAAAAAAABzg/b1dglEWgtrU/s800/1347550506743.gif Thanks. If that's you in the picture I'd like to join in on your next event. Looks fun. I have my own vest/plates (eagle CIRAS), 3rd gen NODs, IR lasers, suppressors and ACH. |

First off, if you do end up moving, welcome. I personally would move a bit north.. Corpus, SA or Austin, it really depends on the type of work ETA, see you are thinking of Hospital work.. are you a dr. or a nurse? My wife is from down there and said that the quality of care down there sucks due to the large number of law suites.. the people / class of people down there are sue happy. I would recommend moving north if you are going to be working in a hospital.. just my 2 cents

Lots of ambulance chasing, bottom feeding plaintiff lawyers down there. One of my co-workers' wife is a Doctor and she used to practice in McAllen which is less of a $#!+#013 than Brownsville... and she just quit her practice down there and they are moving up to San Antonio. |

There was a time I liked going to the Rio Grande Valley, but not so much anymore.
I grew up in Corpus Christi, it is OK if you like fishing, the beach and flat, treeless terrain. - You would need to re-paint your truck. With that 5-ton, you might look to the Hill Country, NW of San Antonio. We made the move out by Bandera in 2005. ETA: Most places in Texas at the moment, you will NOT need a fording kit. |
| First, welcome. I personally love the Valley. The food is awesome. The people are nice and South Padre Island is my favorite beach. It is really under rated as far as beaches go. Don't ask me why they call it the valley because it doesn't look like a valley to me. However, with the border wide open, the problems on the Mexican side are probably going to creep north. Austin is very cool. However, for a 20 acre ranch, I would be partial to North Texas north of Dallas towards Oklahoma. The Bonham area has excellent water and great land. There are plenty of options in the 200k range. |

Our ranch is for sale in the Hill Country.
It's a lot more than 5 acres though. Sick and tired of being a rancher? I hope you ain't leaving the Hill Country? OP, +1 on San Antonio if you're in the medical field. You have the South Texas Medical Center, BAMC and a ton of other good places there. The area around Canyon Lake is still affordable. Still... I have 1.2 acres out there, prices are going up daily. |

nice truck, the border can get a little bad at times so take your time and ask questions. http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k410/m35ben/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20131026_120136_641_zps169ad9ae.jpg That does not look like the border. At least, not part of the border I have seen. You guys are making me jealous with your trucks! Stay away from Canyon Lake, my sister-in-law lives there. I was thinking that the Valley/Border area probably looks more like Florida than anyplace else in Texas. Good thing about the Medical field, there are lots of hospitals, medical centers, etc. even away from the big cities, so living out in the country doesn't always mean a long commute. |

I would not live in a rural area of the Valley. I lived in town 30 years ago. We had friends who lived in the country. They had burglar bars, alarm system, dogs, locked gates and the were still burgled from time to time. It is a high crime region. It is not uncommon to see concertina wire or broken bottles on top of masonry walls to try to keep people out.
Also, probably the dirtiest politicians in the Valley than any other place in Texas. They lock up LEOs all the time for drug dealing or working with the cartels. |

As somebody who moved from Dallas down to the Valley seven years ago, it's not as bad as it's made out to be. Are there better places? Sure there is. Are there worse? You bet.
I personally had more trouble with theft in the Plano-Frisco area than down here. Depending on what part of Florida you're in, you'll probably be in for a culture shock. Just like any other place there are good and bad areas to live, just do your homework. Brownsville has the least amount of illegal traffic in the Valley. Most of what is going on is in the McAllen-Mission area and further to the west. I would say that the beach is nice but it probably wouldn't be for you. HA As has been said, the food is GOOD down here. There's multiple shoots going on every week down here, USPSA and 3Gun, if you're into that. Most of the ranges are down towards Brownsville as well. Several good local shops and Class 3 dealers as well. There's a good gun community down here as well, lots of good folks. It is very liberal (ie:FSA) and we could use some more good people down here! I came down for work and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as bad as I had heard. |

Medical field? Take a look at Houston. You can't beat the medical center in Houston. Dallas also has a lot of good hospitals. My girl is looking at medical jobs out in Texas. I mentioned the Dallas are as well as Austin. Keep in mind that it isn't just Dallas to look at- it's the DFW area. Dallas and Fort Worth and the suburbs between is a large area. There are several hospitals, and this area is growing north, what we call the Golden Triangle- Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton. |
