Anyone work at Rackspace? CHL rules? I understand they under pay but it is a great place to work. Is it worth it? I about a year from ejecting from my current employer to the SA area. I will be coming out into the world with a CISSP/CCIE cert, network speciality and suitably impressive resume. |

Yes, we are a Gun Free zone. It is a great place to work. I've been here for almost 6 years and have never regretted the move. We have plenty of firearms enthusiasts here so you will be among like-minded folks. If you're all like-minded folks, why is your workplace a "gun-free" zone? |

Quoted: I didn't say all, but a lot of us are like minded. Unfortunately not the ones that make those kind of decisions. Truth be known it is probably liability insurance issues. The owner is an anti gun nut. 3006 Is posted in the parking lots I think in SA. However, everyone enjoys working there that i've spoken to. |

Every time I've heard from a headhunter from Rackspace I've sent them away with their tails between their legs when I told them what I was making... way over what they want to pay, and truth be told, I'm probably underpaid for what I do now.
There are other hosting companies around. I know a few people who work for Hostgator. They still underpay. I'm not sure what their policy on firearms is. |

Because their locations (as far as I know) all have a datacenter, especially their main one off of Walzem road. Every datacenter I've been to is posted, whether they're privately owned (like the one for Experian in Allen or AIG in Fort Worth) or "public" (Rackspace, Savvis, etc.). Quoted:

Very low margins, so expect to get paid <60k/yr for even a very senior position. I'm not a fan of Rackspace. I used to work for Hostgator, and they interviewed me. Said I wasn't a good fit for their environment, which has been met with stares of disbelief by anyone who's worked with them. Instead they went and hired this guy: http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/04/former-employee-arrested-charged-with-rooting-2700-hostgator-servers/ My current position has them as a service provider and our support's been very hit and miss. I've had to coach some of their Linux admins through disk resizes because we don't have console access. |

Did they find a reason the guy rooted the servers or did he just have something nefarious planned as he expected to be canned? I have worked with a ton of different companies and it has always shocked me just how bad some IT departments are. Many places don't realize there is nothing more expensive than cheap IT and cheap project managers. I worked with a major publisher one time and their dbase admin couldn't create a view. A year after I first requested it she called me and asked if I could just do it. I worked with one of the big telecom companies "senior" network people trying to get a peering session stood up. They couldn't understand why we couldn't establish a peering session over 192.168.x.x address space. I do have to say I did a lot of work with Ebay and Yahoo, their folks were always very sharp. |

Dunno. I worked with the guy, he had some serious personality issues.
But regardless, knowing what I know about them, I can't recommend them as either an employer or service provider. The only thing good it will do to your resume is make you more desirable, like working for IBM. |

I do recalled a late night drunken tirade by a russian network engineer directed towards the IBM project manager. It even made me blush. ![]() |

Is there some obscure Texas law that prohibits firearms within 1,000 feet of a "datacenter"? |

My business is not posted. We made that decision because we have clients that may want to carry, and we also do business with several tactical equipment and firearms manufacturers.
Employees are prohibited from carrying via the employee handbook. This was necessary to get good rates on general business insurance (not JUST liability). Texas is at-will. An employer and an employee can choose to terminate the relationship at any time for any reason. Likewise, something in an employee handbook may be overlooked in favor of maintaining the relationship. |

Likewise, something in an employee handbook may be overlooked in favor of maintaining the relationship. This is the way most employers in Texas do it. Almost never is the notification in the handbook 30.06 compliant so they can't have an employee arrested if someone finds out they are carrying, they can just quietly reprimand up to firing them for violation of company policy if they choose. |
