Okay Texas lovers, need some help here. I live in a nice spot in Dallas, but need a break with, some elbow room.
I'd like to find a spot to camp next to a clean, quiet bit of river bank, away from the tard's. Any recommendations for a place within reasonable driving distance of DFW? TIA, Ray |

Forgive me for pointing you away from Texas but when I lived in the DFW area our favorite getaway was in southeastern Oklahoma. Beavers Bend State Park near Broken Bow is a beautiful place with water. Just north of there is Lake Arrowhead. To the north of there a ways is the Talimena Scenic Drive. Along this drive are a few campgrounds and the Wilhelmena Lodge that has some interesting history and a restaurant with an incredible view. The scenic drive is about 57 miles total and mostly runs the ridges of a few mountain ranges.
These areas can get a bit busy in the summer but in the off season we have always found ourselves all but alone there. The mountains are certainly not Rocky Mountain scale but they are very scenic and the closest real mountains to the DFW area. Anyone within driving distance should see this area at least once. |

Meridian State Park.
Pretty sure you might be the only one there this time of year. It's a very nice little state park. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/meridian ETA.. it's about an hour SW of D/FW. |

This is probably the best answer thus far. The DFW area is severely lacking in the nice terrain dept

di
Its not the best park in the system but it probably is the quietest. Make sure you have everything you need as it is a 20+ mile run to town and a real store. Also there is little or no cell reception down on the river. Yuo have to get up out of the camp grounds to get reception. I live approx 45 minutes away and hike it at least 5-10 times a year. really like the river trail hike to the falls as an awesome hike also like the spicewood springs trail. All in all a hidden hill country gem. |
