About 4 years ago, I was arrested for public intoxication. That is the only thing on my record. The case was dismissed, but the arrest is still on record. My lawyer says he can expunge it for about $1k. Is there any way that I can do the expungement myself? Has anyone filed their own paperwork?

Damn 1K, is a lot.  There is some fees involved, and possibly a court appearnce, but it shouldnt be more than a couple hours tops.  Does your lawyer charge 250 an hr?

It is an expunction in Texas.  Expunctions are coverd in chapter 55 of the Code of criminal procedure.

Dismissed as in never adjudicated? Meaning the case was tossed before it ever saw a judge.

-or-

Did your case see a judge where the final disposition was set aside and no conviction was entered?

If it's a Class C, you should be able to get it expunged without issue, you could represent yourself "pro se" using forms and documents found on the internet.

They will most likely look into the case and see if you were being a jackass or if it was a simple PI where you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

$1,000 buys a lot of piece of mind knowing that it will never show up again. You will also need to send copies of your paperwork with a demand letter to all the internet background check companies, to purge your record.

$1000 a little less than the ballpark figure I've heard to get a simple expunction done professionally. I would pay the professional to deal with the courts/records folks.

I payed $700? back 17 years ago... not sure how smart you are... but I skipped 3rd and 9th grade and I still hired a professional, because I don't know the law like they do, nor do I have the connections... sometimes just because they deal with each other regularly they build a sort of 'trust' and they can get things done quicker/smoother and actually done because they have that 'working relationship'
