If one were thinking about moving from WV to Texas where would you all suggest? I don't want somewhere where it's humid 365 days a year. I am used to humidity in WV in the summer and deal with it. However, it usually doesn't get hotter than 90-95 degrees here on the hottest days. I am looking for a fairly conservative area that is gun friendly.  my husband is 35 and I am 24. Would like to be near a hospital because I will be working at one. Looking to possibly move in about 3 years once I get my doctorate. Would like an area close to good restaurants and good schools and neighborhoods. I know don't ask for much huh? Lol. We have never been to Texas. Also, I love country life and we both love to hunt. So that could also be a factor. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Maybe the far North part of TX ? They actually get some snow up there near Oklahoma.

My brother lives in Gassaway.

Do you mean gassaway, Wv?!

Yes, Gassaway WV.

He just turned 50.

ETA: And Texas is very very big.  You will have quite a bit of options.  I wouldnt restrict myself too much.

Houston and the coastline is very humid, but its a gulf coast.  I am in the San Antonio area, and it can get just as humid here 150 miles from the coast.  So it really depends.  HOT is HOT IMO! :))

We need more women on here though damnit!

Anyway, my mother lived in Sutton and is from there also, as well as my three older siblings.  He still lives there as I mentioned.

I cannot believe your family is from the same area we went to high school and grew up in! I figured I'd get on here and see what this ar15 forum was all about.     Maybe we'll be Texas neighbors one day.  So how is round rock, tx?

Well I know some people who live in Round Rock, they never say much bad about it, only the HEAT in the summer which is pretty much ALL OF TEXAS... Austin is supposed to be one of the best places to live in Texas and Round Rock is it's neighbor so I can't imagine it's too bad there!

Smaller area so the traffic shouldn't be as bad as DFW/Houston/SanAntonio

I'm afraid you are going to have to compromise on the temperature and humidity requirements.  I don't think there is anywhere in the state that qualifies.

Amarillo sounds like a good fit for what your looking for.  No humidity, it gets a little warmer than what your looking for in the summer 100 to 105 but not that many days of it.  The winter time is snows occasionally and sometimes it's VERY cold.  The medical industry is a big deal in town with lots of growth over the last 5 to 10 years.

Good chance they know one another too.

Roundrock is a nice place.  Its a damn ZOO up there though.  Exploding populations and lots of people.

You couldnt pay me enough to live or work in Austin.  Its a mini San-francisco.

Anyone with a medical background will find a job here for sure. Even the rural areas with smaller hospitals.

Texas is a very big, diverse place. El Paso is closer to Los Angeles than Texarkana.

You and your husband should come spend a week in Texas. That is up to 9 days counting both weekends. You should look around at the Houston area and Dallas – FT Worth, and San Antonio to see which you like best. Both places have many different types and styles of neighborhoods. Maybe some arfcommers can show you around a little.

Check out Austin too. It shouldn't be as much of a culture shock for you. It is far too liberal for most Texans, however.

The summers and traffic are both brutal in Houston. The Sunday afternoon commute will be nothing like morning week day rush hour wherever you end up.

Don't be in a huge rush to buy a house.  Rent for a year or so to learn the area before committing to one location.

Working at a hospital...I might suggest the DFW area, like Arlington. Baylor has some top stuff available to them. My niece just went into them. Many good parts of Fort Worth are within easy driving distance. Arlington schools are also very good, as are Irving and for the much further out, Allen and Plano.

If you wanted to live further out while working there, and didn't mind the drive, I'd recommend some place like Mansfield.

If you are going to up and move, do tons of research and go someplace you will stay.   Thoroughly visit any area you will be considering.  We moved to TX in 98 and while we do love it here, we have been seriously considering a move to the Nashville TN area.  It to is mostly conservative and the topography is way better.

North TX(dfw area) isn't very humid, but it's freaking hot!, and IMO, there isn't much to do outdoors.   Hill country is where I would suggest, but again, it's freaking hot and dry.  It's really pretty though and there will be more outdoor opportunities down there though.  Houston is hot and humid, but it's close to the gulf if you like ocean type stuff.  Notice the common denominator.......It's hot here.  But, come winter time when it's 60 degrees out, you will be wondering why you didn't get here sooner

Just a bit of perspective on Round Rock..

When I moved there from Waco in '83 the population was a little over 12,000. There were three traffic lights in town..  lol.. Now RR is pushing 100,000 and just keeps growing. It's basically part of Austin now, though being in Williamson county helps. In fact, the entire I-35 corridor from Buda / Kyle up to Georgetown is just one long stretch of city and horrible traffic now.

You've never seen traffic like I-35 through Austin at the rush hours. Bad doesn't even begin to describe it.

Moving to Texas, I'd start with looking for jobs in your field and see what's available around the state. Texas is huge and diverse.

And you ain't gettin' away from the humidity unless you live out west or maybe Abilene...

Even in DFW the I-35 is bad. Friday nights and Sunday nights are the worst, as people leave either place and go to the other for the weekend. Fuck's sake what normally takes a 3 hour drive goes 5-6 depending upon how bad traffic was. Because of construction near Temple, last time I was down in Georgetown, what should've been a 2ish hour drive for me took about 4 hours.

Check out Belton (near Temple) - it's got a nice small town feel and is only 15-20 minutes from the main (huge) Scott & White Hospital in Temple.  Town is right on I-35, so easy access to both DFW (2hrs) and Austin (1hr).  Another nice, albeit pricer, option is Salado - it's about 10 miles south of Belton.

My family and I have been in Belton for almost 8 years and really like it a lot.

Belton's not that terrible a commute from Providence or Hillcrest hospitals in Waco either. Plus there's the whole weird thing of "why does it rain in Temple / Belton and no where else?"... lol

I would really recommend La Grange. They just built a new hospital a few years ago and there are lots of old people. Plus you find endless deer and pig hunting opportunities as well as dove and duck. The Fayette power plant lake is also very close if your in to bass fishing.

La Grange is also close proximity to Austin, the sates Capitol, also not to far is Houston. Also you are an hour away from God's Country, that's College Station. Once you go there no college football experience will be the same.

Lastly you are only about 2 hours from the coast so you can go tear up some redfish and trout in the spring and summer and enjoy the gulf prairie in the fall and winter for ducks and geese.

+1 on the  Temple / Belton  & add Georgetown  to the suggestion.  Nice area, good recreation, small town feel, traffic not Austin / D.F.W. / Houston crazy, climate is good.  It may get to over a hundred in the summer (can't be helped) but not too humid like Corpus, Houston or Beaumont.

It is a nice area.  Close to Austin to shop, but far enough away to escape most of the L.L.L. (Looney Liberal Left)

I would like to suggest taking a look at Tyler.  I live about 90 miles NE of Tyler and go there for shopping and occasionally for medical issues.  I'm pretty sure that half the population there is in the medical field or it seems that way .  If for any reason I HAD to leave my very rural home it would be Tyler or Longview for me.

Good luck with whatever you guys decide!
