Gotta love living in Texas...

Sounds like a good plan to me.

I take my daughter to and from school every day and figured I might see some increased police presence, but I haven't seen anything. Today, we made up a bunch of gift bags for her teachers and brought them to school. She needed help carrying them so I walked her to the front door. Plenty of students roaming the hallways but no teachers or staff to be seen.

I almost felt like I should wait around, just to keep an eye out, but I'm sure that'd start some stuff.

we have an officer in front of our elementary school now for a couple hours in the morning and again in the afternoon.
but that'll probably change after xmas break.

this may be old news, but I like it:

My sixth grader's teachers(3 of 6)locked the classroom doors, just to be safe.

I, too, take them to school and pick them up, and make sure all their friends, as well as a bunch of the staff knows me and them. I run catless so I get pretty good attention! Also, the morning shift HCSO for my area doesn't bother chasing me when he sees me roll a stop too much. He just comes by myhouse.

I'm sure some trendy, late-night leftie/pinko TV commentator will make fun of this.  Don't be surprised to see the feds try to stop it either.

Can the principal of a school allow a CHL holder to carry in the building, or does the authorization have to
come from a higher source, such as the superintendent?

I thought I knew the answer to this next question, but after reading all of the various comments floating around, I'm not
completely sure. Anyway, can a CHL holder legally carry on the grounds of  a school (even right up to the door),
or is the firearm supposed to stay in the vehicle?

Thanks in advance!

Might even have to go to the school board. Not sure if superintendent can do it solo.

Federal Gun Free Schools law might trump state law. TXInvestigator?

As I understand it the federal law is trumped by the state CHL (or equivalent). This is why you can be armed in the parking lot with a CHL but without a CHL the federal laws come into play.

To carry inside the school facilities you need to have the approval of the school district. I think that would involve written authorization by the school board. I don't think the principal could grant authorization on their own.

Try walking in with a 2 x 4 with high powered rifle written on it.  Let us  know what happens.

There's a story on WFAA about the stepped up security at DISD. I just fired off an email to the reporter encouraging her to get out there and look for herself to see if anything was being done.

Yeah, that was a A+, #1 dumb ass move by that guy. For those that haven't heard of this idiot, the link is below.

That might be your opinion, but it proved a point.  Their enhanced security is nothing but show.

There are better ways to prove that point. Get proper security consultants in place to do a proper security review. It's not the job of Joe Citizen to walk in and make a scene. You only make yourself look stupid and you know, get arrested and stuff. The entire country is well aware of the lack of security in schools right now.

I believe he is saying he does not run catalytic converters on his vehicle. This basically results in louder and stinkier exhaust which causes people to notice the guy with the loud and stinky exhaust.

Even Joe Citizen can walk in and see they aren't really doing anything.

You don't need to be a security expert to see there's no one there.

No argument there. I agree the security is lacking and we all can see that. I know it does not take a security consultant to point that out.

My point was that there is a right way and a wrong way to bring attention to an issue. This guy making a spectacle of himself and getting sent to jail was not the right way to do it. I think he was doing it more for the publicity then to make an actual point. There are better, more constructive ways to make a point. Making a scene, getting arrested, and getting on national news puts the focus more on him and not the problem he is trying to highlight.

After not getting a definitive answer to my first question above, I found this in Friday's paper (Austin Statesman):
"Texas law bans guns in schools unless the school has given written authorization."
Given that, it doesn't rule out the principal, but it doesn't say who is high enough up the ladder either.
And since it says "the school," that seems to imply someone AT that particular school.

If anyone could still give me a definitive answer to my question about the school grounds, I would appreciate it.
I've read the "Resource" section at the top of the HTF, and it defines premises and building and mentions exclusions,
but I would just feel better if I knew in the positive that the grounds up to the door was legal to carry concealed.

Thanks again!

I do not think a principal would grant this but it depends on how the school is organized. They would likely have to differ to the board.  If you can get a principal to write you an authorization on school letter head then it might hold up. I'm no lawyer though.

I can not definitively answer your question about up to the door or not. If I'm going to the door I'm going in so I leave it in the car. I've never had to know that answer.
