I will be moving to Austin for my work and was wondering if there was any ranges that aren't covered bench-rest style. I'm looking for a place that allows IDPA style shooting at my own accord. Ive been searching but can not find one. Can anyone help?

Best of the West.  Rent a tactical bay and enjoy.  It's a little ways out, but you can setup your own course of fire.

BOTW is about the only range I know of in the area that will allow that kind of activity.  All the other Wilco ranges (Astro, Stan's, Eagle Peak) are FUD ranges (slow shoot only, no FMJ, etc) and both Red's locations are indoor with small lanes...  Lone Star down in Lockhart is the only other range around that I know of that will allow drawing from a holster and rapid firing.  I don't know for sure about Austin Rifle Club outside of organized tournaments/matches, but it is not a public range, it is members only.

I stand corrected then...  they don't seem to have a web site so I couldn't confirm, but I'd always been told that both them and Stan's were kinda FUDish, albeit maybe not as bad as Eagle Peak.

I would call and verify before driving out there.

I know they have the bays for matches, but I seem to recall they would not rent them out to individuals (matches only).  That is all from memory though, nothing I can point to stating that.

Calling first before making the drive does sound like the prudent thing to do...  Good suggestion.

No need to be a member or sign-up to be a member at the Austin Rifle Club when we shoot there 2-3 times a month. 1 carbine shoot and 2 IDPA shoots at ARC.

At ARC you can set up a practice stage in a bay. Only you need to schedule it on the calender and have a S.O. or RSO with you. E mail me if you have anymore questions.

And on the subject, where can I shoot 5 stand or sporting clays around Austin?

I'm a regular at BOTW and love using the tactical bays and the long range rifle.  You don't have to be a member but you do get a discount if you join.
Renting a tac bay is $16 for nonmembers and $6 for members plus your guests would only be $12.  A membership is $100.

I haven't shot them in years but I also want to shoot some 5 stand or sporting clays with my 3 gun shottie as that killed me at CMMG this year.

There are also IDPA matches run at BOTW

Capitol City Trap & Skeet is probably the best public shotgun range in the area.

BOTW has sporting clays.

?

Skeet and trap for sure. Plus covered pistol lanes (new!) and covered rifle lanes and the action bays (roughly 25 to 125 yards in the action bays). Kindof hot out there in the afternoon, but welcome to Texas!

IDPA and USPSA and Steel Challenge matches at ARC, something every weekend.

No sporting clays at BOTW.  Trap and skeet only.

Cap City has trap, skeet, 5 stand and sporting clays.

Best of the West is the place to be imo. Prices and everything have already been covered, but as a heads up they closed on Monday and Tuesday. #rd saturdays are 3 gun matches (not impossible to get a bay you just have to wait an hour or two), and sometimes they have events by people like LaRue (fucking amazing events btw)

What does FUD stand for?  F*@# up something I'm sure.  In any case, I don't shoot on them.

I think of it as "Fudd" which is self explanatory when you put "Elmer" in front of it.

But...Fear Uncertainty Doubt. Unrealistic fear of firearms when used in a non-Fudd manner.
