I'd like to walk in one afternoon, carry some water and food (MREs I imagine) pitch a small tent, build a fire, sip Jack Daniels at night and coffee the next morning. thinking of getting a Kindle so I may read that a bit...just generally enjoy being alone (except for my dog I suppose). I need a place in Central Texas where I can carry a sidearm and possible a SUB 2000 folded inside my pack.

any suggestions?

I've been searching for the same thing.  Biggest problem I have encountered is either not being able to build a fire (can't find a primitive site that allows them) or not carrying a weapon in the open.

I am all ears for any suggestions as well.

Well, it's East Texas, but not THAT far away.

Davy Crockett National Forest has a 20 mile trail that should make for a nice weekend.  Nice and flat through piney woods.  I've been there several times with the Boy Scouts.

Bastrop State Park has a primitive backpacking and camping area...or had one. Not sure if the fire got it or not.

Davy Crockett NF out Highway 7 or 21 is not too far from Central Texas. No real restrictions on dogs or firearms.

You really want to eat an MRE? I like buying a grocery store rotisserie chicken the day before and freeze it. It thaws out all day. Buy a few large baking potatoes, microwave them the night before and freeze, wrap in foil, they thaw slowly too, all day. If you build a fire you can put the chicken on a spit to reheat, warm the potatoes up in the coals. That's some good eating right there. I have freaked out people in the past with a chicken on a spit as they wander by. If they only knew it came from Kroger!

I have cooked a full skillet of hamburger helper the night before, frozen it, ate the next night at camp. So much better than MREs or anything you can buy at REI that is dehydrated.

I didn't think you could carry guns while camping and hiking unless you have a CHL? I thought if you were hunting you had to stay in a designated hunters camp?

Try 6th street.
