Didn't someone post about surplus computers from the city of Dallas?

Mine is about 5 years old and I think I just lost the power supply. I don't need fancy, just looking for something about the same speed for cheap, that I can swap in parts.

One of the Goodwill stores here in San Antonio has a large section specifically for used computers, parts and software - Basically, any of the PC stuff they collect anywhere in the city gets shuttled to that store. I assume they do the same thing in Dallas.

Yes the City of Dallas has a store where they sell surplussed items.  Store Location: 3131 Irving Blvd., Suite 605 (Irving Blvd and Lakawana St.)
Dallas, Texas  75247,  Mapsco 33Y

The hours they are open to the public are 7:30 - 18:00 Thursdays.

I need to to let you know, city employees get to pick through the stuff first to see if they can use it for their job.  So anything in good shape has probably already been taken, we can put in a request to be notified if item X in serviceable condition comes in and then we go and do the property transfer.  The rest of the stuff is usually well worn.  Computers are replaced every 5-7 years, but some are traded-in for credit per our contract with Dell.  Laptops get "recycled", drives wiped clean and then the laptop is sent to whoever requests a laptop...the older laptops we tend to get are not compatible with our software keys nor the more recent machinery control programs.

New power supplies and stuff like that can be found pretty cheap at Microcenter across from Texas Instruments, Midpark/75. I had a power supply go out over the summer and found a new one for $10 there. Yanked out the old one, brought it in to make sure the dimensions were right.

First Saturday Sidewalk Sale still goes on the first and third saturday of every month under Woodall Rogers, 1100 block. I have not been in some time but there are always deals on off-lease, used and refurb stuff. Much like a gun show where some vendors are very organized, some disorganized, some people selling stuff out of their trunks. It's a flea market for high tech computer stuff. Originally it was a ham radio swap meet, then morphed into computers and electronics.

Seems like the last couple times I went the prices were sort of high for some things. A savvy shopper online could probably do better than what some of these guys were charging.

I'm not a computer expert but as long as your power supply is the only thing that is toast, fixing it is a snap.

Tanner Electronics might be another good bet.

I'd suggest Third Saturday as well, that'll be going on tomorrow morning.

Alternatively Frys, or Microcenter as suggested. Depending on what kind of computer you have, you may want to stay away from some of the bargain bin power supplies - they can end up being a lot more trouble than they're worth. But you can get a (mostly) decent Thermaltake for about $40.

You can also go to TigerDirect, just north of the Galleria off the DNT, or CompUSA (which is now a division of Systemax, the same people who own TigerDirect) which is on the NW corner of 75 and Plano Parkway.

Yeah, last time I tried to swap out power supplies, I ended up swapping out the whole damn case, which is like pulling the motor out of a car to change the battery.

This one looks a little more modular. I need to pull It and go over to microcenter.

I haven't been to the downtown swapmeet in 15 years. That's part of the reason I quit building my own pc's. Too much of that new bargain stuff they were selling down there never worked for me, and I'd spend weeks just trying to make something like a network card work. Screw it. I hire a lot of that stuff out now and I have a pretty good guy to do it for me.

There's a place off Frankford Road in Carrollton that sells second hand computers and components. It's been years since I payed them a visit but they had a warehouse with a little showroom where you could oogle the goods.

These might be the guys, it was in this area.
