I have a script from the doctor to get a temp handicap placard.  Do I take it to the DMV to get this?

Yes, the place where you renew vehicle registration, and they will give you a form to complete there and issue the placard. Think it is $5 per placard.

I've never paid anything for mine.

Little known fact. If your tag is red and there are both red and blue spaces, you can only park in the red ones. If there are no red in the lot, you can use the blue.

It was $5.  They also said that the red blue thing only means that the red is temporary and that you can park in any handicap spot.

You know, the red one might have cost $5, but my wife picked it up for me since I was completely incapable of driving at the time. Now I'm barely capable, so I went and got my blue ones myself, no charge. According to the law (I'd have to look it up), red/blue is like I mentioned. However, I've never seen a red spot, so they may well be using a different procedure since the last time I read it. I do know the red ones are good for 6 months, blue is 4 years.

FYI: having a handicap tag does not mean you are entitled EVER! if there are no handicap spaces available... deal with it! Also, never insist you get free Valet cause you are handicapped!

That, and don't take a spot just because you have a tag. If you can make it from a few spaces down, save the one up front for someone worse off than you.

I had one for a while, I was walking with a cane. Primarily, it got me into the parking garage where I worked, instead of having to park a mile away and take a shuttle.

Never did go as far as the Walmart scooters though. If I got a hold of a cart, I could lean on it and push it.

If you do occasionally use a cane, take it to the airport with you. I had to change planes in Atlanta one time and I hobbled off the plane to go to the other terminal. I was nearly attacked by golf carts trying to give me a ride! My wife and 3 year old daughter were with me, we made it in record time.

I use a cane about half the time, depending on whether my left leg is listening to what I tell it to do that particular day. Walking with the cane is slowly tearing up my right hip and knee, though.

Blue is mobility impaired. Red is other than mobility impaired. Color has nothing to do with length of expiration. Mine is red for minimal sun exposure (cancer). I don't use it often. I have only seen red designated spots in certain places in Houston. If you have red, you can park in blue provided they have no red spots and the blue you use is not designated as van accessible.

The problem there is that different people are getting different tags for the same thing. My red one was for a mobility impairment, the same one I currently have with a blue tag.

Uh oh, state emplyees need better training. Not that it really matters about the colors, LEO is only going to see if you have a placard to park in the designated spot before writing a citation.

Yup, and we didn't even touch on the colors of placards in the academy. I didn't know red ones existed until I got one, and I've written more than a couple of tickets for not having a placard/plate.
