I went to Roy G, Guerrero park today with my 9-year-old so I could let her splash around in the river. There is a nice little "beach" area where college students drink beer and frolic in the water....best of all it's free and it's a public park patrolled by APD. The college crowd was there as well as a smattering of mayb e 10 children
You expect a little beer, even though it's not allowed. Of course after we'd been there a few minutes my daughter commented "Daddy if beer is not allowed here how come we're the only ones that doesn't have it?" There were maybe 75 student-age kids there and EVERYONE there was drinking beer! Don't get me wrong: I'm not opposed to a beer or two...or ten, but it's supposed to be against city the law. If it's OK where is mine? After about an hour, Danielle was sitting in the shallow water (with her "Floaties" on of course) and I was watching from the shade with a cold "Snapple" Iced Tea when I noticed two girls (good looking in tiny bathing suits of course) standing in the middle of the river (maybe 100 yards away) very passionately trying to suck each others lungs out. Now I'm not a prude, and if my daughter hadn't been there I might have offered to help, but I really don't want to explain to my daughter why two girls were kissing! The final straw was when a bikini top was displaced enough that a boob popped loose. Apparently her "girlfriend' was hungry at that point, because she started sucking-possibly looking for her afternoon feeding. This caused the boob on the beach to call his daughter and we moved to the other side of the beach away from the happy couple. When three of them fired up a pipe later on I decided we'd had enough sun and we left. I guess Austin is so diverse and enlightened these days you can't take your kid to a public park anymore! |

| I feel bad for you and your daughter, but it was a cool story, bro, and it sounds like you got some data stored for future use. Hell I'm old and I might have had to use a towel to cover up when I left. Sproing! I haven't been to, or through, Austin in 5 years, and won't ever go again, unless I win the Lotto. |

I've lived in Austin all my life and I had to Google where the heck it was. Now I know it's on the south side of the river below the Town Lake dam.
I hate to say it but if you don't want folks breaking the law, drinking beer, smoking dope and sucking boobs in public, you are going to have to be the one to call them on their bullshit by either confronting them yourself or calling the law on them. Call 911and get the park police out there and file a complaint. That's what we pay them for. In general, people are going to do what they can get away with. If they go to the park and drink, smoke dope, suck boobs 10 times and get away with it, then that becomes their normal behavior. If they do it twice and get hassled by cops and other people both times, then they get the idea that it's not appropriate behavior and stop doing it or go somewhere else. So teach your daughter what an upstanding citizen does and call the cops. If the cops don't give a crap, ask for a supervisor. Take pics and video of the violations. Take that park back from the dopers, exhibitionists, and beer drinkers. Or do nothing but gripe on ArfCom and keep your kid at home. Gringop |
