Anyone know of a shop in the Dallas/Ft Worth area that sells aftermarket headlight assemblies for a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?  I've done the polish thing on my current headlights and that's not cutting it. I've found several good looking replacements on E-bay but I'd like to actually see some of these things before I drop $150-175. Earl Owens doesn't carry them for a Dodge and none of the chain parts stores will even attempt to order them. Any ideas?

You might try Midway Auto Supply.

The have a location on W. Jefferson in Dallas.  I think they still have some other stores open in DFW.

They will probably have to do a special order for the part.

There are three Pick N Pulls around the Dallas area.  Try them out.  It's hit or miss, but you can often find what you're looking for.  Biggest problem you'll have is that a lot of the vehicles have front end damage, but I've found that you can still find one side in good shape.

Boot.

They aren't in Dallas... in fact, I really don't know where they are, but I buy aftermarket stuff online at Rock Auto

Just my opinion but stick with OEM parts for that sort of thing.  A few years ago I bought some TYC brand replacement headlights for my wife's Lexus RX300.  They were ~$180 for each side compared to $400 for OEM parts.  In the pictures they looked great and when I got them at first glance they looked like almost exact copies.  At a closer look though I noticed many differences, stuff like the projector lenses being way out of alignment and mounting tabs that didn't quite look right.  I also got some rear side marker lenses that absolutely would not fit right even with some modification.  I ended up returning them and spending the money for real OEM pieces that fit and look perfect.

If you are already thinking of spending at least $150 for aftermarket then why not spend a little more for true OEM parts?  Moparonlineparts.com has them for $99.30 for each side.

Keystone or LKQ (well actually keystone was bought by LKQ)

Polishing them will work but it has to be sanded down past the pitting (I usually do 500/800/1200/2000 grit all wet sand w/ air grinder then polishing compound and finally wax + buff)

Try New World Automotive in Irving. I just replaced all four lenses on my 03 Silverado for $70.

How are they holding up and were they an improvement over the stock units?

What did you use to polish them with?

I have only had them for a week but they seem too be pretty close to the stock lenses.

Used one of the polish kits from Autozone.  It helped tremendously but I was hoping one of these after market kits would throw more useable light. That generation Dodge has horrible lights and leaves a big dark spot right in front of the nose without fog lights. The brights (9004 bulbs) aren't very good either. I haven't upgraded the bulbs because of the haze on the lenses.

We live on a dark two lane Farm to market road and I guess I have been spoiled by my wife's RAV4 and my daughters Ford Escape. Reviews at dodgetalk are mixed about the after market lights but most are happy with them.

Keystone  has a lifetime guarantee. If you get the Platinum Plus they fit pretty well. I work in the collision repair industry and we use a lot of Keystone. Their parts usually fit better and they have the no hassle warranty.
