Depends on where you're located in TX. I'm sure if you're in east TX you are not going to drive down to McDonald Observatory which BTW first post nails it. The farther west you are the better because of less population and smaller cities.

ETA. If you're near the OK or NM border you are lucky. I've been to some pretty dark skies in OK, but the best I've ever seen in my life was on a motorcycle trip through new Mexico, we were probably 150 miles from the nearest town, pulled to the side of the road and turned off our lights and I have never seen so many stars in my life. I was blown away. We could see one of the spiral arms of the galaxy from horizon to horizon. I was truly in awe. I think it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, made me feel pretty small too.
