I have been in several hometown forums asking about different cities in different states because my wife keeps getting different opportunities in different states.  However, Dallas seems to be the most attractive of the options.

My question is what are the best areas to live in around Dallas?  Neighborhoods, cities etc.  It seems like you can have a good sized home that is either pretty new or well updated between $250k to $350k. It surprised me how many people have pools.  Is the weather warm enough that the pool can stay open most of the year?

Dallas summers are hot as hell, thus the pools.  Dallas winters can be cold as a witches tit.

First off, consider the entire DFW metroplex, not just Dallas & it's suburbs. I have lived in the Fort Worth area since 1982. Not sure how big a house you are looking for, but in Tarrant county you can find a very nice home for 200K or less.

Do y'all have any kids?  The Lakewood area is nice, but more expensive.  The price you mentioned OP will get you a nice place in Lake Highlands.  LH also is part of the Richardson School District, which is much better than the Dallas schools.

I'm getting ready to list my four bedroom house in LH.  3200+ square feet, lots of upgrades and one of the nicer homes on the street. Right at $300k.

Thanks.  I looked at some houses in Lake Highlands online.  I like that area.  We also looked in the North Dallas area.  Anywhere to avoid?

Every area in DFW will have places to avoid....with the probable exceptions of the Park Cities, South Lake and Trophy Club.  Most people try to live within a reasonable distance from where they work, sometimes it's just not possible.  Where will you and your wife be working?....that way we could actually narrow it down to streets and neighborhoods that are good.

In 20 yrs Dallas will make you a wealthy man.   Downside is the traffic is brutal, people suck, lots of lefties in control.

The potential job is near SMU off of 75.  I am a business owner and will probably work out of the house for a while.

Cool....lots of places around there.  Lake Highlands is not all that far away, down Audelia or Abrams...or Skillman (take your pick) and hang a right on Mockingbird and you'll be at SMU in a few minutes.  Also consider the M Streets or uptown....although the prices of these have gone up a lot in the last 10 years.  In the M Streets and uptown areas it is very easy to figure out what kind of neighborhood it is, if it looks clean and nice it usually is, if nothing is in english and the area looks bad it usually is.  There are some spots in transition, nothing in that neighborhood is going downhill, it's all getting better.  Also, off of Grand Ave right across from Tennyson park...the northwestern part of zip code 75223 has a lot of nice homes.  All the areas I have mentioned are houses built in the 20s-50s, north Dallas is much newer.  There is the Casa View area and the adjacent Rolling Hills neighborhood.

You haven't mentioned if you were concerned about the schools.  Some Dallas schools are ok, some superb.....most.....well, most should be bulldozed with their staff and faculty....along with their district's representative.  Many parents have chosen to sell their children to the circus to avoid having them exposed to DISD.

No kids yet but they will be coming soon so the school district is important.  My wife and I went to private high school (where we met) so that may be in the cards.  where are the best school districts?

IMO - As others have posted, most Dallas & Dallas County Public Schools leave everything to be desired, with few exceptions like the uber rich areas (Highland Park near SMU).   I personally avoid areas South of Dallas (or for that matter Dallas in general...) with a few exceptions (museum, zoo and world aquarium).   Keep in mind that the City of Dallas has has some serious financial issues and leadership problems.  Just google John Wiley "Black Hole" Price, or the DISD Great Teacher layoff '08 when there was a $64 MILLION budget F'up by the School District to give you some idea of their examples of epic leadership and fiscal responsibility...

I personally would suggest looking in Collin or Denton Counties and consider commuting back into the SMU area.  SMU does sit right off I-75, but can also be reached via the Dallas North Tollroad - which seriously expands your housing opportunities.

You better like traffic.  Collin county could be an hour commute each way and Denton county will take longer.

As was said, You'd like Dallas but its HOT in the summer.  In Dallas though also, you will close the pool in the winter.  They do get snow up there.
