Why would an American born US citizen, residing in the state of Texas  celebrate  the Fifth day of MAY?
Maybe one of you Texans can explain this shit to one of us YANKEEs up north

Not directly related to OP's question, but my favorite part about the so-called reconquista movement is that the people that sneak into this country who are upset with the Arizona laws want to reclaim the southwest Americas for Mexico...the country they apparently didn't want to live in.

Anyway, I had to work on May 5th.  If I have to work, then its not a real holiday

Edit: grammar

I wonder the same thing every time I have to push 2 to reach an English speaking operator or withdraw cash from the ATM.

Why would American born US citizens residing in Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, celebrate St. Patricks Day and wave Irish Flags?

Maybe one of you YANKEEs can explain this shit to one of us Texans down South

Not ALL of us approve of the celebration of a foreign holiday, especially when San Jacinto Day is ignored.

Time to study some American history. Leprechauns have fought in every war that was a war and helped make this country what it is. I don't see anyone demanding we give rights to Paddy or having to push "3" for Gaelic or getting butt-hurt about being called an Irish-American. I support anyone's right to be proud of their heritage and celebrate it, just not demand that we change this country into the country they're from.

Calm down. I am an Irish Citizen. He did not ask about giving rights, fighting in wars, Press 3 for Gaelic, or demanding change.

He asked about celebrating your heritage. It is only natural to celebrate your heritage. Irish being a great example. So that is the one I used.

You can have my Irish passport, when you pry it from my cold dead fingers.

But really May 5th isn't a cutural holliday, it's the celebration of a national military victory of a country the chose to leave. St Patricks Day is the celebration of a religious miracle. And as said above San Jacinto Day should be a state holliday at the least.

How about getting the Mexicans to reconquer Mexico?

Seriously, they need a real civil war.

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. That's it––plain and pure and simple.

It has no legal significance; there's a big joke is that Corona beer started it all to get better sale of their Mexican suds.

Answering your question, to me, it makes no sense as an American.

On the other hand, as a Texan if your heritage is Mexican, you can celebrate it as a great victory over France. Or you can choose not to celebrate it.

If you're of French descent and a Texan, I reckon you'd be pissed off all day. Or you can choose not to be pissed off.

...now ya got me thinking. How many folks in Louisiana, who have British blood in their veins, get all upset or worked up when they celebrate the Battle of New Orleans in Louisiana? There's re-enactments galore there.

It's just an excuse to go out and get drunk. That pretty much is why it's celebrated.

I had a drink and laughed at the fact that the state of Puebla celebrate their ancestors beating a small French force at the lowest-point of their dominance...

We are losing this country little at a time . It is not a AMERICAN holiday or a TEXAS holiday it is giving the Re-concestadors a inch so they could take a mile and this Guberment is letting them do just that

The same reason in San Antonio's the biggest non-traditional holiday for the year is Fiesta.  It is a ten day celebration leading up to San Jacinto day, which is Sam Houston's victory over Santa Anna army and the independence of Texas.  You have loads of Hispanics celebrating chasing the Mexicans out of Texas.  The big reason we celebrate these holidays?  It is an excuse to DRINK BEER!

Vic Mackey: Well maybe in your own mind, amigo. But in the real world, I don't answer to you. Not today, not tomorrow, not even on Cinco de Mayo.

THIS. Most Mexican's are much more proud of 16September (Independence day) than 5May.

The big Cinco de Mayo thing this year is all due to AZ protests.
