So, up until recently, most of the border problems were confined to larger cities (Juarez, Laredo, etc), but over the last few months it has really spread into the smaller crossings as well. In particular, the McAllen/Progresso area and their counterparts. Lots of businessmen being shaken down/beaten, kidnapping/ransomings, cartel and that paramilitary org taking women off the street etc. Doing whatever the hell they please basically.
Also there are reports of the crossings being shutdown randomly, but no info about it. Anyone else got some info on this? All of mine is coming from in-laws who live on both sides. This really sucks. I like going to visit them, cooking drinking and being festive, but no more, and especially not since I have an 8mo daughter. Looking for serious info, not Mexico/illegal immigrant hate. |

Hell, the legal Mexicans who work for me are scared when they go back to Mexico.
My main foreman tells me he fills his van with enough gasoline to go directly to his parents house before he crosses the border. He drives straight through and doesn't stop for anything. What ever happened to the civil war they were having in Chiapas? Mix in the drugs lords, the coyotes, and the federales, I wouldn't want to go back either. |
|
I am a LEO in this area and things are getting bad across the border. Explosions, grenade attacks, and other things that you hear about on the local news. I have relatives on both sides and the ones in Mexico even say not to go visit. I don't go to Mexico especially the way things are now. The cartels now drive their vehicles with their names on the sides of the vehicle. The cartels are the ones patrolling the cities now.
They way I see it a SHTF scenario might be closer than we think. |

The way I hear it, they're already bringing that crap over here! I'm glad I live way up north in the DFW area, but it could get hot up here, too. And Mz. Bailey-Hutchison says she's not really sure we need a border wall. Hell, we need a wall AND the Marines down there. . . |
|
My friends from Mexico are saying as much, that they would risk anything rather than have to go back to Mexico and fear for their lives.
Let's hope we don't end up with another Pancho Villa and have to form another Punitive Expedition. That would put a deep split in our country. |
| i dont think a wall is going to cut it. as much demand for their product as there is in the U.S. its hard to imagine that there isnt some one on this side of the fence on the take facilitating the the transportation and logistics of the tons and tons of drugs. controlling the border and securing the vast amounts of entry points is important, but i think that some investigation should be how its being allowed in than the mode. i know they have already cought some border patrol agents on the take, and the way some of those cartels operate its hard to say no if they threaten your life or you family. there is hardly a perfect solution to this problem. a wall provides a physical barrier, but they will go over it under it or through it. maybe some electronic servailence, thermal cameras to monitor and track. uavs etc. nothing is perfect, in this case probably costs alot of money. |

Damn. I didn't realize it's such a huge problem. |

The in-between areas (Progresso, Miguel Alema'n, Piedras Negras, Villa Acun~a, etc.) have been just as bad (or almost so) for the whole time, they just haven't gotten as much press as the big cities (Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey, Juarez). I can't say anything about NM, AZ and such because I haven't spent much time in those border areas, but I'd say there isn't a border town (either side) from Brownsville to El Paso that hasn't been touched by this drug war. It's a big bad deal. I talked to two people from Monterrey this week who say that they're worried for their friends and families because "something big" is brewing. The streets of some of these towns/cities are like ghost towns, with only military/police (sometimes) and convoys of black suburbans (gee, wonder who they are) on the streets. I love it down there, but I won't go any more, and I sure as hell wouldn't take my wife and kids. It's too bad, because there are some really great places and folks that live there. |
| i got word of possible work doing protection details out there on the US side for businessmen who cross into MX to work. problem is, you can only carry in TX and not MX, so you have to pass the guy off to someone else at the border. and who that might be, who isn't a crook himself, is the issue.... |

Cartels banding together to fight the Zetas in the Tamaulipas area, translated from local article:
February 28, 2010 Do not worry, don’t be paranoid this soon will end. This is a “restructuring”. Soon, the extortions, kidnappings, and “road blocks” will end. There will be peace without living in fear. To the People: don’t have fear, out people are completely identified. That is why we have decided to mark our trucks using CDG (Cartel del Golfo) and XXX M3. XXX ME = X CGD, X Gente del Chapito, X La Familia Michoacana, M3= M. P. al Servicio We have marked them so that the army won’t confuse us and we won’t get confused since there have been fights in different places. The trucks that are not marked or that have a Z are pigs. Just don’t get in the way if you see gunfire, let us do our work to eradicate this trash. The press is silent due in part of the agreement, we give applause to Grupo Reforma for this space, there is no other way. People, all of this raucous is because of the new alliance between El Chapo, CDG and La Familia. The drop that spilled the water was the pressure from society for the deaths of the young people at the party in Juarez and so many other “chingaderas”. The protected one, El Chapito, together with the new alliance have taken up arms to “chingar” the Zetas because these Zetas have _______ the business of transfer of drugs with their “levantones”, protection payments, etc. Lately, with their “pendejadas”, not caring for liberty and the peace of the Mexican people. El Chapito, CDG and La Familia, in the alliance are going to respect the plazas, will not demand more quotas, will ban kidnappings among other things. All this is for the alliance, in the agreement with the federal government, it will remove the army in less than 3 years. As long as these conditions exist and everything is under control. That way, there will be freedom for business, with out violence, since this has hit us all anyway. People of Reynosa: don’t send your children to school, try not to go out if it’s not important. Do this until further word, as you know what is happening in the streets. People of Monterrey: Continue your normal lives, but be careful without going into paranoia. If someone takes your truck, give it to them and don’t risk your life as you can gain it later one way or another. People: don’t use darkened windows, don’t speed, don’t burn tires while driving because we can confuse you. Parents: make sure your children don’t think themselves narcos (I guess don’t go around dressed like one) because you can be confused. The governement and the press are not talking, this is agreed upon. We are at war but it will soon pass. If you are a Zeta, run because here comes the monster. For the pigs, the grenades are for you to align with the new. (alliance?) And Zetas: like you say, be alert, because the company has arrived, and don’t cry because no one cares. The New Federation |

It would be nice if we could get some armor down there. Set up intersecting lines of artillery fire. Let spooky patrol the desert and and have a little mad minuite in different sectors every night. Word will get out real fast. It's obviously not your land they'd be tearing up... in case you don't know, people who live down there work that land for a living.... The outsider's wet dream of a free fire zone is retarded and no solution at all. |
| Well how about the govt buy all the land you know immininent domain or whatever and have corridors where people can cross and do their commerce. Make everything else free fire zone. It would be cheaper in the long run and a better solution than what we have now which is no solution. After all we are being invaded. Doesn't sound too retarded to me. |

The Texas border (both sides) is pretty much solid ranchland (some farms) from Brownsville to El Paso. |

give them authority to use deadly force I think they have that already. I don't own land down there so it is easy for me to say do this or that. I do however think that if I did I would be happy to have the military on it. Better them than illegal aliens leaving trash and whatnot all over. What say you tx rabbit you have a bigger dog in this hunt than I do.

Again if accurate we should not be sending money or information to the Mexican government as they are sending the drugs over here. |

the easiest way to stop this shit is keep demand down through preventing use, which has always been basically ignored.
killing traffickers is fun and sexy, but its also a never ending cycle. its always easier to blame the mexicans when were the ones who buy it. we need to, as americans, keep trying to interdict, and start puching preventing like a sob instead of throwing stones in glass houses. |

Exactly. You eliminate demand for both illegal labor and drugs and you eliminate the problem. Your solution to those problems is then up for debate. Personally, I'm for legalizing drugs and immigrant labor. |
