Thinking of switching out ADT to something I can upgrade/monitor/install myself.  I'd like something that can send me a text and perhaps dial 911 through VOIP in case of an alarm.  Would like cameras I can monitor remotely over the internet.  Would like to add a basic kit now with window/door breach  and motion detection and add things on as I  have budget or need.  Anyone have ideas or a system that they like?

My one suggestion is that, if you use surveillance cameras, make sure to set your system up to upload a picture a minute or every 10 seconds or whatever you think to a server OFF SITE.
Doesn't do you much good to have all that footage of the burglars on your fancy home server or home video recorder, only to have had it stolen along with everything else.

You cannot have alarm systems automatically call 911 directly.

As far as alarm system a digital communicator that sends, texts, emails, or calls you CANNOT call 911.  And most models still require a central station, As far as panels how many zones? hard wired or wireless,  or a mix of both. With camera systems i recommend using a DVR lockbox,  if you lock up your firearms why not the DVR.  With downloading video to a remote sight remember not all models have that option, and more importantly you have to rely on a third party provider to maintain a connection.  If a thief cuts the lines to your house your DVR will not be able to send anything out. That said a properly installed system backed up by cameras placed in the right area will give you great protection. The alarm will let you know if something is wrong and the cameras will show you what happened.
