Does anyone know of a place to buy wrecked vehicles that aren't stripped down?
I went to one place here looking for a donor(found one that had been rolled and smashed up), but after being questioned about what I needed it for, he began to itemize part by part till it hit around 6 grand. |

I'd try some of the charity auto auctions; seems alot of small dealers buy several cars there &
piece em' together. where you located? there's one on Hwy 20 between Bastrop & San Marcos. the junk yard guys know what they have; I'd make him an offer for the whole car next time, no questions answered, then sell the scrap yard what you don't want. |

I'm in Bryan. I hadn't thought about the auction places, figured I would have made out better at a yard. I'll check into it. |

what kind of car are you looking for? An Explorer 4x4, 98 to 03 with the 4.0 sohc. Found one at a used car lot for around 5k, all in one piece, that's why I was blown away by the price tag on just parts from the junk yard. Just looking to do a conversion. |

Compare the cost of a car Vs. the cost of it's parts and you'll see why selling parts is a good business!
I'd second the idea of checking local greensheet / thrifty nickel rags for cheapo "needs work" vehicles. Take what you need, then sell the rest (you need the title to sell to a junk yard and worst case is you get scrap metal value for the remainder of the vehicle. If you sell it to a metal yard, you need to drain the gas tank, radiator & Coolant, drain the tranny, engine oil, brake fluid and remove the battery. (toxics) BIGGER_HAMMER

By law titles on vehicles bought for salvage must be turned into the state within 60 days. After the title is turned in the vehicle cannot be resold - it is scrap only. So getting a salvage yard to sell you a complete vehicle probably won't happen.
The only way a salvage yard can sell one is if it just came in and it doesn't have a salvage title. Depending on how the vehicle was wrecked a salvage may not get a negotiable title, it may be for scrap only and then it can not be resold. Just keep in mind, salvage yards don't get cars for free. And they are in business to turn a profit. A decent mileage sohc engine for and explorer will bring over $1000 so trying to find a "bargain" explorer in a salvage yard is going to be hard. Explorer's were one of the most popular vehicles turned in under the clunker program. All of the engines in the clunkers had to be locked up. This makes a good engine the most valuable part in a salvage explorer . Transmissions were always problematic so they bring good money also, especially the 2002 and newer. Not saying it can't be done, just not going to be easy to find a cheap donor. Your best bet is to get a contact that has a salvage license and pay him to buy you a vehicle at a salvage auction. All of the auctions are online so you can view the cars before you bid. Just keep in mind that you need cash in hand. Vehicles have to be paid for and removed from the auction sight within 24 hours. There are buyers fees associated with the sale and the final bid price is not the actual price you will pay, fees can add another 500 to the price. Also there may be a fee to load the vehicle if you can't get it on a trailer by yourself. Once you buy it you own it. No buyers remorse, no , oh I didn't know this was broke . All sales are final. Not sure what your project is, but a S10 4x4 can be had cheaper. |
