Neil Sperry Podcast
This is the fruit and nut tree varieties recommended by Dr. George Ray McEachern from Texas A&M on Neil Sperry's Gardening Show. Dr. McEachern is pretty old and he goes through the list pretty quickly, but it's worth listening to if you're doing any planting. He covers pecans, apples, figs, peaches, apricots, plums, pears, grapes, blackberries, blueberries... probably some others, mainly for North Texas but he does mention other areas. I tried to write it all down while he was on the radio, but I couldn't keep up. I'll download the new stuff tonight and listen to it again, try and make a list. You'll probably have a hard time finding all the varieties he listed, but you'll find some. They can get kind of "rare" and marketing and sales figures don't always agree on what ends up on store shelves (my pet peeve). I also attended a nursery trade show this weekend. One of my customers grows and handles some fruit trees. I got their list and they are located in Tyler. Don't know if there's any interest in a group buy, but it was a $1000 minimum for delivery, which is a lot of fruit trees. I have their price list, you might find stuff locally for not too much more, you will just have to hunt around. Big Lots also has some trees. My Dad got a mismarked tree last year from TreeTown USA and I got a bad reference on them, so... shop wisely. |
