My grandparents gave me their 1951 Chevy a really long time ago, almost 20 years.  It was sitting (meaning it hasn't run that entire time) on their property for all that time until this past May I had to move it, so now it's in my garage. I was never given a title. My grandfather passed away in 1995 and my grandmother is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's.   My dad and his siblings have gone through all of my grandparents estate, and no one can find the title.  So, how do I 1) get a title and 2) get it transfered in my name?   I think one of my aunts has POA.

If you go to the local DMV office where you get your license plates renewed, they will have a form you can fill out, and state the VIN of the car.  They can then run the VIN and tell you who the owner is according to the title.  If the title is in your Grandfather's name, who ever is executor of his estate should be able to request a copy of the title via the lost title paperwork, and then sign the title over to you.  If the title is in your grandmother's name, some one in the family with a power of attorney should be able to request the title, then sign it over to you.

Interesting. I have a similar situation with a 50+ year old car. Unfortunately the DMV has no record of the VIN. What other option is there?

Years ago a friend had the same problem.   In his case they filed a mechanic's lien on the vehicle then he "sold" it on the courthouse steps to himself.  To assure he was the winning bidder, the amount of the lien far exceeded the value of the vehicle.
