I took my chl class back in March.  After taking the class I went online and paid my fee along with doing the online application.  Should I go ahead and mail in my packet from the class, or am I waiting on something to be mailed to me before I mail my packet in?

When did you do the online thing?

DPS has already issued you a CHL number if you applied and paid online.  You will need to wait for the packet they sent you.  In it there will be a copy of the application you filled out online.  You need to verify its accuracy and sign it if it requests a signature.

You then send that form along with your already completed affidavits (3) your passport photoholder with 2 passport photos, and your two fingerprint cards as well as your TR100 back to DPS.

You will not use the yellow application that was in the packet your instructor gave you.

Does that help?

Yes, that helps.  I did my online portion in April sometime. The packet never showed up so I called on the 25th of June and was told another packet was going to be sent to me and I should expect it in 7-10 days.  It's now 7/10 and still no packet in the mail.  I'll probably call again on Monday

DPS is very very backed up on processing CHL apps right now, and thus probably very slow at getting anything done.

That sounds about right...  from what I've heard they are typically running 90-120 days from when they receive an application to when the license is delivered, assuming they don't ask for more information.  They received my app on May 4th according to postal receipt confirmation, so I am probably still waiting a month or two more.

I took the class with 2 friends of mine who still haven't gotten their license. They sent mine back too because apparently I forgot to sign the back of one of the photos.

Dohh...  hope that doesn't set you back too long.

How long between when you sent in your app did you receive it back?  Curious to see if at the 60 day mark I'm safe from having that happen or if I still may have more hoops to jump through.

Related:  anyone know how long they are taking on RENEWALS?  I mailed mine in on May 1st.

DPS received my packet in late January.

I'm still waiting.

This is for a renewal.

Supposedly the issue is Harris County, an enormous backlog and spike in applications, and only 1 DPS trooper to do the background checks.

wow. this and other reports of backlog is the reason i just started the renewal process at the 180 day mark to avoid an expiration.  took the class recently and am awaiting a packet.  hopefully, you'll get yours soon.

gov. perry, if you're reading this, the dps folks need some help to take care of your voters...

I suspect things are going to get worse for us thru DPS before it gets better.  While the CHL staff are good people and DPS supports the CHL program, DPS is having problems.  Google and read the Sunset Report on DPS.  OUCH!

I bet it was around 60 days, don't remember for sure. But I have my license and my friends don't so it appears to be luck of the draw.
