This mornings Abilene Reporter News had an AP(Pravda) report that Gov. Perry wanted to put 600 soldiers in "reconnaissance platoons"  along the border ala 2007. Any chance TXSG would be included?

600 is a pretty good number of troops. With on going federal deployments I don't see why TXSG would not, or could not. The only concern I would have is if weapons were authorized or not. I would not want to be caught somewhere out in the middle of the no where with no weapon (or only a sidearm) to defend myself against a bunch of drug cartel paramilitary types with AK's and probably some M4's they "obtained" from the Mexican Army, perhaps even an RPG or two. Not fun times!!

IMO the minute they here troops where on the border doing actual patols and recon, assuming this was to be correct and was to be actually implemented, you would have cartel members all over the place looking to egage a patrol at every oppertunity (esp. if it got out we were unarmed and we all know how well the media keeps secrets) They would figure kill one or two soldiers and they will pull them out to avoid more caualties and bad media attention that would follow. Unfortunately a presedence was set for this back in the early 90's.

Now if weapons were auth. including long guns. Let me get my go bag and the rest of my battle rattle and I'm GTG.

Just my thoughts.

I don't think the state guard could protect themselves without being armed.  But on the flip side, I wonder how friendly the law would be to the txsg.  The law hasn't been too friendly with border patrol shooting at known smugglers.  Even more butthurt when you shoot "commit a crime" with a machine gun (+10years due to a law that was originally meant to protect law enforcement officers, not to be used against them)

Bush only commuted two border patrol agents.  They get out of jail, but they're not forgiven (unlike a full blown pardon).  I'd love to protect our borders, but i don't think the law would protect me.
