[ARCHIVED THREAD] - CHL question (Page 1 of 2)

| I just submitted my App. online. On the receipt it says to supply "criminal history supporting documents". Do I need to do this even though I just stated all my arrest on the online app.? |
|
Quoted:
Yes, they need the court documents showing the disposition of the cases.. I wonder why they would even give you the option of selecting "unknown" in the disposition box, then have you send in documents. If I had the documents then I would have known the disposition and not have selected "unknown", lol. Can the county clerk mail these documents out? I had to go to Mineral Wells just to get a copy of my past arrest, the city clerk said they had to be picked up in person. |

You need records from the county and district court levels. |

Trying to post in an existing thread instead of making a new one. DPS returned my passport photos saying they are blurry and to please send a new set. My question is, do i need to get my CHL instructor to sign the new set? Along with myself? If the letter did not state to do so, then no. And your CHL instructor should have signed the originals only if he printed you. |
|
One of the guys i took the class with did the online thing. You complete the online application, then they send you a packet or envelope. You insert those tiems which you need to send, and submit it that way. It does allow you to pay by credit card instead of going through the hassle of getting a money order. This is the email he sent: I completed the online application, result is they review the application online and mail you the confirmation. Once I receive the confirmation then I am to mail in the paper working including all materials including the confirmation letter. Not sure if it will be faster, I did receive a tracking number to review progress online though and they took my money up front. He mentioned that it actually goes to a different address than the standard packet. It's possible it might be quicker. |

stupid question, but when submitting an application online how do you submit your CHL class paperwork, fingerprints, photo's ect? just mail them in? why not just mail the application in as well? You CAN do that, but signing up online means you have already paid the state. So after your class you only have to mail the required paperwork. Everyone who has NOT signed up online has to include their state fee in their application. The state will also mail a copy of your online app to you to sign and make any corrections and/or additions since the time you originally applied. That copy has to go in your packet back to Austin. |

"all my arrests"? Maybe you shouldnt be carrying... Maybe you should change the law then. The rules are very specific and a few of us have to jump through hoops and follow them to the "T" because we did something stupid in our past. There are times when an arrest is for something that is not unethical or immoral. While I see your point, an arrest does not always = unsafe w/ weapons, poor judgement, or bad character. Judge not lest ye be judged and all. |

Quoted:
I will agree that ONE indiscretion that resulted in arrest is not that big a deal, but ALL of your arrests? And are you stating that it is not unethical or immoral to violate the law, MULTIPLE TIMES?

Here are a few others for ya; Prov. 3:21 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. Jer. 22:3 Thus saith the LORD; Execute ye judgment and righteousness... Phil. 1:10 so that you may be able to discern [judge] what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ... Phil. 1:7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you [judge you]... |
|
Quoted: And are you stating that it is not unethical or immoral to violate the law, MULTIPLE TIMES? Eh? It is not necessarily unethical or immoral to violate the law. Multiple times, even. Even violations that may have resulted in arrest. Are you suggesting the law is the highest moral and ethical authority in the land? |
|
When I was younger, I had quite a few arrests. Unpaid speeding tickets, "Unlawful" possesion of a handgun. (Pulled over new years eve after I turned 21. Had not been drinking or anything, but 2am and the officer determined that the definition of probable cause depended on the time of day. Had a pistol under the seat. Loaded of course.) Fight in a bar. All told, I had 4 arrests on my record. I had to jump through all the hoops as well. I got my permit, no problem. |

While I'm certainly not suggesting any sort of equivalence between the OP's arrest record and this guy's... ...I do seem to recall his having a pretty impressive rap sheet. We really need to know some more facts before pronouncing moral judgement. But this is America, home of you are GUILTY until proven innocent in the eyes of the public. Unfortunately the news media has brainwashed most people into always thinking the worst without knowing the details first. |

Are you suggesting the law is the highest moral and ethical authority in the land? Never said that. However, part of ethical and moral behavior is lawful behavior. What law could violating it be ethical or moral? I'll give it a shot. Let's say the Federal Govt enacted a law that banned all guns. Now we all know that such a move would be in direct violation of our rights under the Second Amendment. Would it be unethical or immoral for freedom loving American's to break this law and continue to exercise their right to keep and bear arms? Laws, for the most part, are not based on ethical or moral behavior - most laws are designed to limit the personal rights and freedoms of a citizen in order to protect either that citizen or all citizens. Some laws, such as the banning of guns, are designed to protect the power of the government by limiting the power of the citizen. In either case, I consider violations of the law in this example not only excusable, but rather commendable. Look at the most frequently violated laws: speeding, driving without a license or registration, failure to yield, failure to stop at a stop sign - none of these have any basis in ethical or moral behavior. |

I agree that USUALLY it is a duck. But not ALWAYS. This verse is not speaking to not judging at all –– it is speaking to not judging unfairly
I am well aware of that. And thats why I said it. To have no details and then decide that someone isn't fit for something is an unfair judgement. |

But then that's a statistical matter, and not a basis for making a definitive determination about a single instance. Rules have exceptions. Do you know that this isn't an exceptional case? I don't. Did Gandhi walk like a duck? Or did he weigh the same as a duck? If he did...was he a witch? Burn him! |

Not necessarily true. If you subscribe to the notion that these activities endanger the lives of other people on the road, and your particular moral or ethical belief system leads you conclude that an act that endangers others is immoral or unethical, then the law has plenty of basis in morality and ethics. Given specifics you could argue an act that directly endangers other is immoral, while an act that would perhaps indirectly endanger others is morally acceptable. I haven't really come up with a "what if" in response to txinvestigator, because he could come up with a modifer "what if" that invalidated my "what if," and me his, and so on. Ad infinitum. Analogies make my head hurt. Perhaps someone could dig up some actual examples we can use and discuss. |

And remember, I didn't challange the OP, someone else did and a defense was offered that spoke of moral and ethics....I just don't see how you can defend mutliple arrests. And if those arrests don't legally keep him from a CHL I have no beef about it. ;) |

Is it immoral or unethical to carry a handgun to Kroger without a license? After all, some argue that the licensing requirement is a violation of the 2nd.

Perhaps, but it is unethical to disobey those laws. |

Perhaps, but it is unethical to disobey those laws. Why is it unethical to disobey those laws? Really? True ethics are OBJECTIVE, and not subjective. What an interesting topic....... |

Given the context of the discussion I'd have thought it quite obvious to an intelligent man such as yourself that I was referring to a single instance of an individual with multiple arrests on his record. |

You've gone out of your way to repeatedly misinterpret it, in spite of having it explained to you already. Multiple arrests do not a single instance make. And I see that as a problem.
Wow. I have to wonder if you're being intentionally obtuse about this, or if you've taken up drinking before noon. |

Ethical behavior and lawful behavior may coincide, but Ethics are not a function of law. Rather, the other way around, hopefully. |

Odd, they didn't request any paperwork from me on my record (couple of misdemeanors). But mine were from 15 years ago, not sure if that matters? Anyway, I never submitted any documents related to criminal history, just put it all on the application. While doing the online application it ask to submit documents with the disposition of the arrest. Mine were only misdemeanors as well, traffic violations and I got caught with a little pot in 1999. To me it seems no biggie, but I guess others think that I shouldn't be allowed to carry a firearm to defend myself because I smoked some pot and had a couple fast cars when I was young.

| I had a roommate in college (6 years ago) steal 3 grand worth of stuff from a store he worked at. I knew about it but was not involved and never said anything. Well when he finally got caught he took me down with him. At the time i could not afford a lawyer so i had one appointed to me. The lawyer was a dumbass that was probably just helping the DA get through people so i was offered deferred adjudication. I had no clue what it was and was told if i accepted the terms (3 years probation and pay around $2500) i would not have to go to jail and it would be off my record when i was done. Needless to say, i saw this as the easiest way out and it has cost me dearly. I now have a arrest but no conviction for a state jail felony (which has kept me from getting several jobs and kept me from moving into a few apts) on my record that i have no way to remove for at least 10 years then i might can have it expunjed. I am not a bad or violent person but because of some dumb choices on my part when i was younger i can not have a CHL till at least 2016 i believe. Just though i would throw this into the discussion. |

YES!!!!!! ALL MY ARREST. Why would you think "maybe I shouldn't be carrying".
Because of all your arrests? I have no Felony arrest.
So? Theres a hell of a lot of serious misdemeanors out there. That said, my comment was more to be a smart ass than anything else. Hell, I don't even have any arrest in the last 10yrs.
Thats a good thing. I meet all the criteria for a CHL.
Excellent. Are you perfect?
of course not. Have you never done anything that was wrong? Have you ever made a mistake?
Of course, but I didnt get arrested multiple times. |

This is the first i have heard of this you'll find more info on the Florida HTF but basically you're good if you normally pass NICS check. License is around the same price or cheaper and good for 7 years. |
