| So I was told by a couple people that seeing as I don't have my military ID yet ad I'm 18, that I could submit my packet with a copy of my enlistment orders in place of ID. But DPS just told me no. Anybody ever done it before? |

Anybody ever done it before? Minimum age for possessing a handgun legally in Texas is 21. I dont think they have any kind of waiver for being in the military. Maybe Im wrong and if so, someone will be along shortly to correct me. |

If DPS told you no on the enlistment papers, then wait for the proper documentation before sending in you application packet. You cannot PURCHASE a handgun until you are 21. However if you have legal access to a handgun or were gifted a handgun (legally, no straw purchase) then as active military you can carry concealed once you have completed the CHL course. |

OP you have to wait to get your .mil ID |

If the DPS told you NO. I don't think your going to sway them with what some guy on the intetnet said ![]() ![]()
Just wait until you get your ID Well 2 of the people that told mr this said that that's how they got theirs. Whats to stop someone from backing out of their contract to join the military after getting their permit? Not saying you will, just that someone determined to get their CCW permit a few years early could do that. |
| How about wait until you are actually IN the military before trying to take advantage of military benefits. I applaud you for making the choice to serve like many of the rest of us, but just having an enlistment contract doesn't make you "military" just yet. Worry about getting through basic training and your job training before worrying about using it to get a CHL. |

Texas law allows a "member" of the US Armed Forces to receive a CHL at 18. The law does not dictate what evidence of that is required, so DPS gets to decide. If they told me to submit a Military ID, I would wait until I received mine.
You might check the Texas Administrative Code to see if that requirement is spelled out there. I don't have time to look right now. Texas does not regulate the "ownership" of weapons. The possession, carry, etc is regulated. There is no Texas law limiting the age of possession to 18. OP, thank you for your service. |

So don't get on some high horse for clarification are you in the TX State Guard, TX National Guard, Army Reserve, or U.S. Army? some people here seem to think you are a member of the U.S. Armed Forces which is why they are questioning why you don't have a military I.D. yet. |

I am Texas State Guard, we are one of 3 branches of the Texas Military. Along with the Texas Army National Guard and Texas Air National Guard. The TXSG is part of the Texas armed forces. |

under Texas Law, TX State Guardsmen/women are exempt from paying the CHL fees and do have the 18+ exemption that other military personnel enjoy.
as i am not part of that organization i don't know the qualifications, length of service, training requirements, etc. but i do know it is one way to get a CHL at 18! |

Here you go. This is an excerpt from the Texas Government Code Section 411.172.
411.172(g) Notwithstanding Subsection (a)(2), a person who is at least 18 years of age but not yet 21 years of age is eligible for a license to carry a concealed handgun if the person: (1) is a member or veteran of the United States armed forces, including a member or veteran of the reserves or national guard; (2) was discharged under honorable conditions, if discharged from the United States armed forces, reserves, or national guard; and (3) meets the other eligibility requirements of Subsection (a) except for the minimum age required by federal law to purchase a handgun. 411.172(h) The issuance of a license to carry a concealed handgun to a person eligible under Subsection (g) does not affect the person's ability to purchase a handgun or ammunition under federal law. |
